Eligible Vehicles
To assist you in identifying those vehicles that have this component-specific extended limited warranty (ELW)
coverage ELW, the following Vehicle Comment will show in the VIN-specific Warranty Vehicle Inquiry (WVI).
SI B65 02 22 (RC 61 12 90 03 00): For this vehicle, the limited warranty for the Knee Air Bag
wire harness repair cable procedure for defects in materials and / or workmanship has been
extended to 10 years / 120,000 miles as determined from the original first in-service /
delivery date. This coverage is subject to the same vehicle eligibility requirements,
limitations, and exclusion criteria that apply to the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty
(January 2025).

SITUATION
A check control message (CCM) for the restraint system (Air bag) appears. In the instrument cluster, the red air
bag warning light lights up permanently.
One of the following fault codes is stored in the ACSM (air bag control unit):
930949 - Knee airbag, driver: short circuit to negative terminal
93094F - Knee airbag, front passenger: short circuit to negative terminal
93094C - Knee airbag driver's side: Resistance too great
930952 - Knee airbag, front passenger: Resistance too great
930949 - Knee airbag, driver: short circuit to negative terminal
93094F - Knee airbag, front passenger: short circuit to negative terminal
93094C - Knee airbag driver's side: Resistance too great
930952 - Knee airbag, front passenger: Resistance too great

Component, Issue, and Repair-Specific Extended Limited Warranty (ELW) Coverage
For the eligible vehicles that qualify, BMW of North America, LLC (BMW NA) is extending the limited warranty
coverage for these vehicles’ when it is required to be performed, the:
Knee Air Bag wire harness repair cable procedure to:
10 years/120,000 miles, as determined by the vehicle’s original first in-service/ delivery date.
This component, issue, repair specific extended limited warranty coverage applies to defects in materials or workmanship.

This coverage applies to the specific vehicle (VIN), the remaining portion of the ELW is transferrable to each
subsequent owner, and it is subject to the same vehicle eligibility requirements, limitations, and exclusion
criteria that applies to the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks.
Air bag replacement(s) and/or the repair of other SRS-related issues are excluded under this coverage.

Note: This bulletin is notice of a limited warranty extension. This is NOT a notice of a Recall or Service
Action.
There is no immediate repair required unless the BMW vehicle is currently experiencing this problem.
Customer Notification Letter
Even though this is NOT a Recall, BMW NA is sending VIN-specific customer notification letters (sample per
attachment).

The class member owner or lessee, as defined in Service Information Bulletin B01 13 23, and their class
vehicle that qualifies are eligible for the class action settlements issue-specific repair remedy when it is
determined that an SRS warning light illumination is caused by liquid ingress from a spill through the
front center console cupholder.
The coverage period for this issue-specific repair is 7 years/75,000-miles as determined from the

limitations and exclusions which are outlined in the settlement and the service information bulletin.
If the above repair is also required, and the vehicle qualifies, the SI B01 13 23 repair procedure will overlap with
the repair procedure outlined in this Service Information Bulletin (B65 02 22), please adjust/reduce your claim
submission accordingly.

Cause
Over time, the wiring harness going to the knee air bag(s) can rub against the metal support tubes for the
instrument panel, chaffing and damaging the wiring.

CORRECTION
Remove the center console to access the ACSM control module.
Remove the under dash trim panels on both the drivers and passenger’s sides.
This gives sufficient access to perform this repair.
The dashboard cover does not need to be removed.
The knee air bag harnesses end connectors are cut off and the wiring taped back to the harness.
Run the airbag new air bag repair wiring harnesses from the ACSM control module to both knee air bags.
The replacement harnesses do not need to follow the same exact routing path as the original.
Both replacement harnesses are to be installed, even if there is only a fault showing for one side.
Apply felt tape to the edge of the center console support to protect the ACSM wiring.

PROCEDURE
1-Perform a vehicle test with ISTA.
2- Remove the center console as per Repair
Instructions 51 16 165 to access the Air Bag
Control Module A11 (ACSM) wiring connector
(A11*2B).
Check the ACSM module for signs of corrosion
within the electrical connector.

3- Follow Repair Instructions 51 45 184 to remove the under dash trim panel on the driver’s side.
Unplug the connector (B8*1B) on the knee air bag on the driver's side.
Cut the knee air bag wiring harness near the connector and tie back the cut wiring with a cable strap
4- Follow Repair Instructions 51 45 195 to remove the under dash trim panel on the passenger side.
Unplug the connector (B77*1B) on the knee air bag on the passenger’s side.
Cut the knee air bag wiring harness near the connector and tie back the cut wiring with a cable strap
The repair wiring will be run in conjuncture with additional harness protection
addressed in the next steps.

5- Unplug the wiring connector from the ACSM (A11*2B).

6. Cover the edge of the center console support
(the edge inside the circle) with felt tape (part
number 54 34 7 248 700).
Check the ACSM module for signs of corrosion
within the electrical connectors.

7- Reference Wiring Diagram ‘A11 Crash safety module SP0000064078’ and confirm wire color and pin
number BEFORE cutting these 4 wires at the ACSM connector.
Cut the 4 wires for the knee air bag wiring harnesses near the ACSM connector, and tie back the 4 cut wires
with a cable strap.
ACSM Pin 25 (A11*2B) goes to pin 1 of driver knee air bag (B8*1B).
ACSM Pin 20 (A11*2B) goes to pin 2 of driver knee air bag (B8*1B).
ACSM Pin 5 (A11*2B) goes to pin 1 of passenger knee air bag (B77*1B).
ACSM Pin 10 (A11*2B) goes to pin 2 of passenger knee air bag (B77*1B).
Then pin 2 repair cables into the air bag control unit connector (A11*2B).
8- Wrap the harness of the knee air bag on the driver's side and passenger's side with an abrasion-resistant fabric tape (part
number 61 13 6 925 452).
9-Follow SI B01 13 23 for the ACSM cover cap if applicable.
10- Route one repair harness to the knee air bag on the driver's side and the other to the knee air bag on the passenger’s side.
The replacement harness does not need to follow the same exact path as the original.

11- The knee air bag wiring should be protected from chafing on any support bracket with felt tape (Felt tape
part number 54 34 7 248 700).
Important: The felt must be glued around the edge!

Additionally, other materials and small parts that are not specified above, such as fluids, lubricants, one-time
use screws, nuts, and seals, which must be replaced or installed according to the ISTA repair instructions/ETK,
must be selected from the Electronic Parts Catalog, or other approved BMW Group resources, according to the
respective vehicle type. Invoiced these items separately under the Repair Code listed in this bulletin.

CLAIM INFORMATION
For eligible US-specification BMW vehicles that are registered and operated in the United States (including
Puerto Rico), the component and issue specific 10 years (120 months) / 120,000-mile extended limited
warranty coverage for defects in materials and/or workmanship applies to qualifying repairs, as described
above, that are performed by authorized BMW centers.
This component, issue, repair specific extended limited warranty coverage applies to defects in materials or workmanship.

This coverage applies to the specific vehicle (VIN), the remaining portion of the ELW is transferrable to each
subsequent owner, and it is subject to the same vehicle eligibility requirements, limitations, and exclusion
criteria that applies to the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks.
Air bag replacement(s) and/or the repair of other SRS-related issues are excluded under this coverage.

The existing limited warranty coverage for the whole vehicle and other components has not changed.
This coverage supersedes the coverage that is provided under the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program or any
BMW Group Vehicle Service Contract that applies to the vehicle.
For the issue described in this bulletin, the “Repair cable, airbag system” is then covered by the remaining
portion of the extended limited warranty coverage period.
Non-Qualifying Repairs
Repairs performed on ineligible vehicles, eligible vehicles operated and repaired outside the United States and
Puerto Rico, or the diagnosis and repair of issues that are outside the intended scope of this extended
coverage, engine damage is not covered, other unrelated issues, and/or that are due to outside influences are
not covered by this limited warranty extension. This exclusion also applies to repairs that were performed using
(including those repairs that result from using) non-genuine BMW parts and/or used BMW passenger car or
light truck parts.
