Symptom/Vehicle Issue: Vehicle Does Not Start. Electric Steering Column Lock
(ESCL) Does Not Function, Steering Wheel Locked. DTCs U1433-62, U1412-62,
U1517-62 In The ESCL

Discussion: The customer may state the vehicle does not start. The ESCL does not
operator and the steering wheel is locked. Upon scanning the vehicle for DTC’s, one or
more of the following may be Active or Stored in the ESCL:
- DTC U1433-62 - Implausible Ignition Switch Status Message Received-Signal
Compare Failure
- DTC U1412-62 - Implausible Vehicle Speed Signal Received - Signal Compare
Failure
- DTC U1517-62 - Body Controller Secret Code-Signal Compare Failure

Diagnosis: Perform the following checks:
1. Confirm if warning light appear in the cluster.
2. Confirm Battery Voltage is within 10 and 16V.
2. Inspect the vehicle for any aftermarket accessories that may have been installed
incorrectly.

3. Inspect and replace any open fuses.
4. Using a Scan Tool, read PCM, BCM, ABS, and RFHM DTCs. Repair and clear all
Communication and Security DTCs prior to performing ESL Module diagnostic
procedures.

Repair: Clear the faults and do not replace the ESCL unless you confirm the following:
1. Confirm proper system voltage, the battery must be between 10 and 16 volts.
Using the Scan Tool, read DTCs and refer to the appropriate Diagnostic
Procedure.
2. Inspect the vehicle for any aftermarket accessories that may have been installed
incorrectly.
3. Inspect and replace any open fuses.
4. Using a Scan Tool, read PCM, BCM, ABS, and RFHM DTCs. Repair and clear all
Communication and Security DTCs prior to performing ESL Module diagnostic
procedures.
5. If the Scan Tool cannot communicate with the ESL Module, check the harness
connections using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide. Inspect the wiring
and harness connector and terminals related to the ESL Module for physical
damage and corrosion. Ensure related ground circuits are clean and tight. Clean
or repair as necessary.
6. Using the Scan Tool, read and record all ESL Module DTCs. Record the ESL
Module software version and variant ID (configuration or level).
7. If the ESL Module was recently replaced, ensure the ESL Module was properly
programmed.
8. Check for Service Information Tune-ups or Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) that
may apply (such as PCM, BCM, ABS, and RFHM).
9. If after executing previous steps the ESCL DTC's still present and cannot be
cleared, then replace ESCL module.
