Elevator Flag Pin Doubler — Upgrade Available
Units Affected: Certain AA/AN/AN-OC50(E)-E80, AA/AN/AN-OC55(E)-E88, AA/AN60(E)-E93,
and AA/AN67(E)-E100 units built from May 2013 to March 2024.
Background: Altec has learned that operation at inclinations greater than the allowable slope indicator
limits shown on the unit's serial number placard can cause the elevator flag pin(s) to move slightly from
the fully seated position. Excessive pin movement can cause damage to the pin flag, secondary retention
strap, and associated fasteners. On units with excessive movement in the flag pin(s), the unit must be removed from Service.
Customer Action: Continue to inspect all pins and fasteners as part of the Preoperational Inspection
documented in the unit's Operator's Manual. If there is a noticeable gap (1/10" or more) or you suspect your
unit has been operated on slopes greater than the allowable slope indicator limit, inspect the unit using the
procedure on page 2. Based on inspection results, you may need to order the below parts.

Because the issue has been caused by misuse, if the unit requires the replacement of any flag pin(s) or
secondary retention strap(s) or the installation of the reinforcement kit due to the pin movement, the parts
and labor are at the customer’s expense.

Inspection Procedure: A 0.020" feeler gauge or caliper will be required for this inspection.
1. Position the unit on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and chock the wheels. Remove the key
from the ignition, and secure it following Altec’s vehicle lockout/tagout procedure.
2. Locate the flag pins on both ends of the elevator cylinders and on the elevator cross link (refer to
Figure 1). There are six flag pins on the street side and six flag pins on the curb side for a total of 12
elevator flag pins. All 12 pins require inspection.

3. Inspect each of the 12 pins to confirm if the flag is fully seated against the mounting plate.
• If each pin is fully seated, put the unit back into service. Proceed to step 7.
• On any pin that is not fully seated, measure the gap between the pin flag and the mounting plate in
the area around the pin shaft (refer to Figure 2). Use this same method for gap measurement whenever it is called for in the remaining steps.
– If the gap measured for each pin flag is less than 0.100", proceed to step 7.
– If the gap measured for one or more pin flags is greater than or equal to 0.100", proceed to step 4.

4. Inspect each pin, secondary retention strap, and associated set of fasteners for damage. Examples
of damaged parts are a pin with a flag that is cracked or broken, a secondary retention strap that is
cracked, broken, or bent beyond repair, and a fastener that is broken. Any secondary retention strap
that is slightly bent may be repaired and reused.
• If any pin flag, secondary retention strap, or associated fastener is damaged, proceed to step 5.
• If all pin flags, secondary retention straps, and associated fasteners appear undamaged, perform steps
a through c shown below.
a. Attempt to fully reseat each pin that is accessible in the elevator's stowed position, and measure
the resulting gap. Make note of any pin(s) that cannot be reseated to within 0.020" gap to indicate
their replacement is required.
b. Skip attempting to reseat any pins that are not accessible in the elevator's stowed position.
c. Proceed to step 6.
5. The unit requires the replacement of all damaged pin(s) and/or damaged secondary retention strap(s)
and the installation of a reinforcement kit.
a. The replacement parts, kit, and associated labor are not covered under the Altec Warranty Policy.
b. If any pin(s) require replacement, it is recommended the repairs be done at an Altec facility due to
the weight of the elevator assembly (refer to Pins Require Replacement at the end of this document
for more information).
c. The unit must be taken out of service until the repairs are completed.
d. Attempt to fully reseat each undamaged pin that is accessible in the elevator's stowed position, and
measure the resulting gap. Make note of any pin(s) that cannot be reseated to within 0.020" gap to
indicate their replacement is required in addition to the damaged pins.
e. Refer to the unit's parts pages to determine the part number(s) of any damaged pin(s) and of any
pin(s) noted for replacement. The part number of the secondary retention strap used on all pins is
970348499.
f. Order any required new pin(s) and/or secondary retention strap(s) and one reinforcement kit, part
number 991522342.
g. Straighten any slightly bent secondary retention strap(s).
h. Install the new pin(s) and/or secondary retention strap(s) and the reinforcement kit upon receipt.
i. Put the unit back into service.
j. Do not complete the remaining steps of this procedure.
6. The unit requires the replacement of certain pin(s) if they were noted for replacement in step 4 and the
installation of a reinforcement kit. Perform steps a through h shown below.
a. The kit, any required pins, and associated labor are not covered under the Altec Warranty Policy.
b. If any pin(s) require replacement, it is recommended the repairs be done at an Altec facility due to
the weight of the elevator assembly (refer to Pins Require Replacement at the end of this document
for more information).
c. If the repairs cannot be performed immediately due to parts availability or other circumstances, the
unit can remain in service for up to 30 days under the following conditions.
– Each pin must be inspected daily to determine if the gap has increased to beyond 1/4”. If the gap
reaches 3/16", the pin will contact the secondary retention strap. If the gap reaches 1/4", the strap will
be bending outward slightly. If the gap on any pin exceeds 1/4" and the pin cannot be pushed back
in to achieve a gap of less than or equal to 1/4", the unit must be taken out of service.
– The fasteners retaining each pin and secondary retention strap must be inspected daily to determine if they are intact. If any fastener has failed, the unit must be taken out of service.

– Once the reinforcement kit and any pins requiring replacement are received, they must be
installed as soon as possible.
Refer to the unit's parts pages to determine the part number(s) of any pin(s) noted for replacement.
Order any required new pin(s) and one reinforcement kit, part number 991522342.
Straighten any slightly bent secondary retention strap(s).
Install any required new pin(s) and the reinforcement kit upon receipt.
Put the unit back into service.
Do not complete the remaining step of this procedure.

7. The installation of a reinforcement kit is optional.
• The kit and associated labor are not covered under the Altec Warranty Policy.
• The unit can remain in service without the installation of this kit.
• Any pins with a gap exceeding 0.020" must be inspected daily for gap growth.
• If the gap on any pin reaches 0.100" or more, the reinforcement kit should be installed.
Pins Require Replacement
If a flag pin is damaged and requires replacement, use the procedures in the unit's Maintenance Manual
for component removal. Depending on the pin(s) requiring replacement, various components could need
to be supported and removed to replace the pin(s).
