Description of Change
This document provides guidelines on when to use a safe high voltage battery shipping container
(safety box) based upon the state of the high voltage battery.
Service Instructions
If a high voltage battery meets any of the following criteria, the high voltage battery pack will
require a safe battery shipping container on an open air and dedicated transport:
Visible external damage indicating it may have been in an incident
Has been dropped
Has evidence of an internal coolant leak
Visually swelled or bulged
Failed isolation checks
Shows signs of deposits around the burst disc that may indicate venting
State of battery pack is unknown (including, but not limited to, lack of isolation test results,
inability to gather battery pack incident history and/or fault data, etc.)

Cummins Inc. representative directs the use of a safety box
High voltage batteries that do not meet any of the above criteria or any product specific Cummins
Inc. approved service documentation can be shipped in a standard shipping crate. Escalate
through 1-800-CUMMINS if there is any question about which crate should be used. A lithium-ion
certified shipping clerk is required for all high voltage battery shipments. Reference Primary Parts
Communication (PPC) 5899 for additional details on the high voltage battery ordering and
shipping process. Reference local health and safety guidelines for required high voltage battery
quarantine procedures prior to shipping.
