Purpose:
This bulletin provides instruction for updating the Medallion instrument cluster software version to a new version
updating the high transmission temperature icon and alarm to match the Allison high-temp fault settings. The
alarm activates when the TCM detects one of the following over-temperature conditions in the transmission sump.
• 250° F (121° C) for 15 minutes
• 262° F (128° C) for 1 minute
• 270° F (132° C) for 3 seconds

• All procedures outlined in the bulletin must be performed by skilled service personnel. Refer to the product
service manual for descriptions of maintenance procedures.

Make sure ISO Programmer and Medallion
Dash Update Tool are installed on laptop
before beginning travel for software update.

NOTE

You can swap between Miles/Km by holding
the right side button after the instrument
cluster has booted and mileage is shown. If
Miles/Km is swapped, press the right side
button again to fix.
1. Confirm ISO Programmer is installed on the laptop. Administrator access is required. If this program is not
installed, contact Engineering and/or DT to have program installed.
2. Assemble cables (A001C171, 3991923, 3065419) and receptacle connector (A001C924) into a PCAN-USB
adapter cable as shown in Figure 1. Make sure the exposed connector on receptacle connector (A001C924) has
the J1939 triangular wedgelock shape exposed. See Figure 1.

3. Turn vehicle battery disconnect switch ON.
4. Turn vehicle ignition switch to IGNITION position.
5. Press and hold the left and right instrument cluster side buttons when the instrument cluster lights up and the
Oshkosh logo is displayed to enter the Diagnostics screen. See Figure 2.
6. Confirm a software update is needed by looking at the App Version number. Verify software update
compatibility before updating software. Installing incompatible software version will cause the instrument
cluster to brick and be inoperable.
Software compatibility
There are two branches of compatible software. IMPORTANT! Care must be taken not to mismatch as it will
“brick” an instrument cluster.
1.2.25 should be updated to 2.4.0
1.2.27 should be updated to 2.4.0
1.4.4 should be updated to 2.4.0
2.0.0 should be updated to 2.4.0
2.3.0 should be updated to 2.4.0
3.0.0 should be updated to 3.4.0
3.3.0 should be updated to 3.4.0

7. Record odometer and total drum revolution values if instrument cluster requires a software update. When in
the diagnostics screen press the instrument cluster left-side button to exit, then press right-side button to scroll
to ODO. See Figure 3. These values can also be found in overhead display About Screen.

8. Turn vehicle ignition switch to OFF position.
9. Plug the PCAN-USB adapter cable into truck and laptop.
a. MY22 and older: Locate cab harness connector C12F (green tape) under the dashboard by the driver’s
left foot. See Figure 4. Remove the terminating resistor from connector C12F and install PCAN-USB adapter.

b. MY23 and newer: Locate cab harness connector C12F (green tape) under the dashboard by the driver’s
left foot. See Figure 5. Remove the terminating resistor from connector C12F and install PCAN-USB adapter.

NOTE

Starting the vehicle’s engine is not required,
but should be done in cases where the
batteries may not last the duration of the
update (cold conditions, low voltage
conditions, situations where the truck has
not been operated for a long period of time,
etc).

Turn vehicle ignition switch to IGNITION position.

NOTE

Do not have any other CAN devices operating
on the laptop at the same time. Do not have
PCAN Analyzer or Orchestra operating.

Open ISO Programmer program on laptop. If ISO Programmer fails, turn vehicle’s ignition switch to OFF
position and start over at Step 10. This happens occasionally and is not unusual.

Use ISO Programmer to update software.

a. Select S-Series Cluster from the Device drop down menu. See Figure 6.
b. Select Browse button in the Flash Data portion of ISO Programmer window. See Figure 6. Browse to
location where updated cluster software hex file from engineering is saved on the laptop.
c. Click the Program Device button at the bottom of the ISO Programmer window. See Figure 6.

Check Odometer and Total Drum Revolution values that were recorded in Step 7. Press the right-side
instrument cluster button until they appear in the display. See Figure 7. These values can also be found in
overhead display About Screen.
If the Odometer and Total Drum Revolution values are different, they need to be reprogrammed using Medallion
Dash Update Tool.
If the values are the same as recorded in Step 7 continue to Step 14.

Disconnect PCAN-USB harness from connector C12F under dashboard and reinstall terminating resistor
removed in Step 9.

Turn vehicle ignition switch to OFF.

Turn vehicle battery disconnect switch to OFF.
