SITUATION
A check control message or MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) may be illuminated, with one or more of the
following faults stored:
138207- Active cooling damper control (AKKS), top: blockage at warm ambient temperature
21B043- Active cooling damper control (AKKS), top: blockage at all ambient temperatures
138222- Active cooling damper control (AKKS), above: positional deviation error detected at warm ambient
temperature
138209- Active cooling damper control (AKKS), top: Control deviation at all ambient temperatures
13822B- Active cooling damper control (AKKS), top: Control deviation at all ambient temperatures
21B042- Active cooling damper control (AKKS), below: blockage at all ambient temperatures
138206- Active cooling damper control (AKKS), bottom, blockage at warm ambient temperature
138225-Active air-flap control, bottom: top limit position not detected
138224-Active air-flap control, bottom: bottom limit position not detected

CAUSE
Multiple potential issues may be the cause, including:

1. Faulty active air flap(s) (Upper and/or lower)
2. Software error in the DME
3. Debris or blockages from outside influence (non-warranty)
4. Information error memory that does not require a repair
5. For G20 only- Detached lower active air flaps

CORRECTION
Depending on the results of the inspection procedure, a software update or flap replacement may be
required.
In the case of some information error faults, the fault code can be deleted as it will not trigger a MIL or check
control message.

PROCEDURE
For each fault code, the corresponding active air flap must be thoroughly inspected for stones or other
debris that may cause a mechanical blockage. If no debris or blockage from outside influence is found:
Use the table below to begin diagnostics based on the specific faults stored:
Upper active air flap fault code(s):
Correction:

Is the fault frequency above 1?

YES: Perform the system test plan (ABL-DITAT1214_BX8_KJ) for the active air flaps. If the
flap fails the functional test plan, follow the test
plan recommendations to replace the faulty flap
AND program the vehicle using ISTA 4.16.2x (ILevel S18A-19-03-530) or higher.
Note: If the test plan does not indicate a faulty
flap, the fault memory can be deleted, no check
control message or MIL will be illuminated.
NO: No action required; fault can be deleted.
No check control message or MIL will be
illuminated.

FOR G05/G07 ONLY:
Is the serial number of the upper flap included in
the attached list?
Refer to Attachment 1 “Serial number
location” for the location of the serial number
of the flap.
Refer to Attachment 2 “Serial numbers” to
search for the serial numbers of the flap.

YES: Replace the upper active air flap
AND program the vehicle using ISTA 4.16.2x (ILevel S18A-19-03-530) or higher.
NO: Perform the system test plan (ABL-DITAT1214_BX8_KJ) for the active air flaps.
Test fails- Replace the failed air flap,
AND program the vehicle using ISTA 4.16.2x
(I-Level S18A-19-03-530) or higher.
Test passes-Program the vehicle using ISTA
4.16.2x (I-Level S18A-19-03-530) or higher.

Perform the system test plan (ABL-DITAT1214_BX8_KJ) for the active air flaps.
Test fails- Replace the failed air flap
AND program the vehicle using ISTA 4.16.2x
(I-Level S18A-19-03-530) or higher.
Test passes-Program the vehicle using ISTA
4.16.2x (I-Level S18A-19-03-530) or higher.

Lower active air flap fault code(s):
0x21B042

Correction:
Check the environmental details of the fault
using ISTA.
Did the fault set at an ambient temperature
below 45°F?
Yes: No action required, fault can be deleted.
No check control message or MIL will be
illuminated. Flap was likely temporarily blocked
by icing.
No: Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.16.2x (ILevel S18A-19-03-530) or higher.
Is the fault frequency above 1?

0x138206

No: Perform the system test plan (ABL-DITAT1214_BX8_KJ) for the active air flaps.
Test fails- Replace the failed air flap(s)
AND program the vehicle using ISTA 4.16.2x
(I-Level S18A-19-03-530) or higher.
Test passes-Program the vehicle using ISTA
4.16.2x (I-Level S18A-19-03-530) or higher.

Yes: Using ISTA fault code information for this
fault code, check the dates that the fault
occurred.
If the fault code occurred multiple times on
the same day:
Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.16.2x (I-Level
S18A-19-03-530) or higher.
If the fault code occurred multiple times on
different days:
Replace the lower active air flap AND program
the vehicle using ISTA 4.16.2x (I-Level S18A-1903-530) or higher.
For G20 ONLY (If vehicle has additional faults
in conjunction with the faults below, begin
with the steps below):

for the lower active air flap.
The underbody shield will be removed following
repair instructions 51 47 490 “Removing and
installing/replacing underbody protection
(Front)”, and the flap connection should be
inspected.
Was the flap linkage disconnected?
Yes: Correctly reinstall the flaps by clipping the
flaps into the linkage as shown in the
attachment.
No: Perform the system test plan (ABL-DITAT1214_BX8_KJ) for the active air flaps. Follow
test plan recommendations.

If vehicle programming is specified by the diagnosis tableAlways connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10 ).

Required parts will depend on the results of diagnosis from the above procedure. Not all vehicles will
require active air flap replacement.
Obtain the part numbers for your specific vehicle by entering the chassis number in ETK/AIR which takes
into account specific equipment and/or options.
