Always wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves when servicing your Indian Motorcycle. Change the
engine oil at the intervals specified in the Periodic Maintenance Table found in your Owner's Manual.
Change the oil more frequently if the motorcycle is subjected to severe use, especially operation in
cold weather. Freezing condensation can result in plugged oil lines and serious engine damage. The
oil change kit is part number 2884171. The kit includes four quarts of Indian Motorcycle Full
Synthetic 15W-60 oil, one oil filter and two drain plug washers.
The total amount of oil required for the oil and filter change is approximately 3.5 - 4 quarts (2.8 to
3.8 l). Follow all instructions carefully. Do not overfill.
Note: After an oil change, the low oil pressure indicator may illuminate when the engine is started. If
this occurs, do not increase RPM above idle speed until the indicator turns off. Operating above idle
speed could result in damage to the engine.
To perform an oil and filter change on your Indian Scout, follow these steps:
1. Park the motorcycle on a flat, level surface in a well-ventilated area. Note: For proper oil drain, use a service lift to ensure the
motorcycle is vertically centered.
2. Start the engine and allow it to warm up at idle for at least 5 minutes.
3. Stop the engine.
4. Clean the area around the two drain plugs.
5. Place a drain pan under both drain plugs. Tip: Placing a rag in the bottom of the drain pan will help prevent the splashing of oil.
6. Remove the drain plugs and washers with a 6mm Allen Socket, and allow the oil to drain completely. Tip: Remove the front drain
plug first.
7. Inspect the drain plugs. The sealing surfaces on the plugs and engine should be clean and free of burrs, nicks or scratches.
8. Install new sealing washers (part number 5812232) on the drain plugs (part number 7052306) and reinstall the drain plugs to
specification. Torque: 15 ft-lbs (20 Nm)
9. Place a drain pan under the oil filter and turn the filter counter-clockwise with an Oil Filter Wrench to remove it.
10. Using a clean dry cloth, clean the filter sealing surface on the engine.
11. Lubricate the O-ring on the new oil filter (part number 2520799) with a film of fresh engine oil and ensure it is in good condition.
12. Install the new filter and rotate it clockwise by hand until the filter gasket contacts the sealing surface, then turn it an additional
3/4 to one full turn.
13. Wipe up any residual oil around the filter.
14. Use a funnel and add the recommended oil (part number 2880187) through the engine oil fill port. Capacity: 3.5 - 4 quarts (2.8 to
3.8 liters).
15. With the motorcycle in an upright, centered position, start the engine and allow it to idle for 30 seconds and then stop the engine.

16. Inspect the oil level by looking at the oil sight glass. The oil level should be at or near the full mark on the oil sight glass. DO NOT
OVERFILL. Note: After an oil change, the low oil pressure indicator may illuminate when the engine is started. If this occurs, do not
increase the RPM above idle speed until the indicator turns off.
17. Check for leaks around the drain plug and oil filter.
18. Navigate to the settings menu on your motorcycle and select OIL LIFE AND SERVICE RESET.
19. Select the reset function and confirm your selection.
20. Dispose of the used oil and filter properly at your local recycling center.
