SYMPTOM:

On occasion, vehicle exterior taillamp assemblies are fogged with a light layer of condensation on the
inside of the lenses Fig. 1. This may be reported after the lamps have been turned on and brought up to
operating temperature, turned off and then rapidly cooled by cold water (such as rain, or the water from
a vehicle wash).
Lens fogging can also occur under certain atmospheric conditions after a vehicle has been parked
outside overnight (i.e. a warm humid day followed by clear cool night). This will usually clear as
atmospheric conditions change to allow the condensation to change back into a vapor. Turning the
taillamps on will usually accelerate this process.

CAUSE:

Condensation/moisture build up in the taillamp assembly.

This bulletin supersedes Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 08-112-23, date of issue April 29, 2023, which
should be removed from your files. All revisions are highlighted with **asterisks** and additional
model years and models.

DIAGNOSIS:
The TSB is to inform technicians that there is now a procedure to perform a condensation clearing before
replacing a rear taillamp assembly as defective / leaking due to the condensation build up within a rear
taillamp of a vehicle and is also available in Service Library. Refer to the detailed service procedures available
inDealerCONNECT/Service Library under: Service Info>08 - Electrical / 8L - Lamps and Lighting / Lamps/
Lighting - Exterior / Standard Procedure>Lamp Lens Defogging (Front/Rear).
If the customer describes any of the symptoms listed above, perform the Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. A taillamp assembly that exhibits condensation/fogging should be evaluated in a service bay environment
by first drying all water from the outside surface of the lens and operating the lamps for 60 minutes by
starting the vehicle and turning on the headlamps and hazard lights.
2. The taillamp assembly should be checked every 10 minutes.
a. If the condensation/fogging has begun to clear from the taillamp assembly within 60 minutes with
the taillamps operating, this indicates the taillamp sealing has not been breached and the taillamp
assembly does not need to be replaced Fig. 2.
b. If the condensation/fogging has not begun to clear after 60 minutes with the taillamps operating, or the
lamp has large amounts of water droplets visible on most internal surfaces, this indicates a problem
with the taillamp sealing that has allowed water to enter the taillamp. In this instance, the customer is
also likely to report that moisture in the taillamp is always present and never disappears Fig. 1.
A taillamp that exhibits internal moisture permanently should be replaced. Refer to the detailed service
procedures available in DealerCONNECT/Service Library under: Service Info> 08 -Electrical / 8L Lamps and Lighting / Lamps/Lighting - Exterior / Lamp, Tail / Removal.
