2021 Half/Pack® Main Cortex Controller/Display Program Update

NOTE: READ THIS BULLETIN IN ITS ENTIRETY BEFORE BEGINNING ANY REPAIR WORK.
This Service Bulletin is to update the Half/Pack® Main Cortex Controller and Display Programs. This update
includes communication enhancements for the joystick and Switch Bank controls. The unit(s) that should be
updated with the new program are identified in the Products Affected section of this Service Bulletin.

PLANNING INFORMATION

Products Affected
This Service Bulletin applies to all 2021 Half/Pack® units. The original programs for the Main Cortex
Controller and the Display needs to be updated to the NEW programs as shown in Table 1.

PREPARING THE UNIT AND WORK AREA
Because the auxiliary power must be ON to perform the Half/Pack® controller/display program update,
standard Lock-Out/Tag-Out procedures will not be followed. However other applicable safety precautions
should be followed before and during the program update. Clear the area around the unit of all unnecessary
equipment and personnel. It is strongly recommended that the truck be quarantined from other units.
Always wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment as required by your employer or as required in
the Service Manual when performing the update.
Prior to programming the unit:
A. The area around the unit should be clear of all unnecessary equipment and personnel. It is strongly
recommended that the truck be quarantined from other units. Place barrier tape around the truck to
keep anyone from walking into or under moving parts.
B. If necessary, remove any carry cans (Curotto, Bayne, or any other can) from the forks. The forks must
be empty when performing this procedure. Refer to the can’s service manual to remove the can from
the forks.
C. Ensure the gear shifter in the chassis is set to NEUTRAL.
D. APPLY the parking brake and ensure the parking brake works properly.
E. Chock all wheels.
F. Move the arms to full down position, level the forks, and fully retract the packer.
G. Turn the engine off.
H. Turn the ignition switch ON for auxiliary power.

**On the display, take note of all options and setpoints to return the unit to the same setup after
programming**. This information will be used later in the update.

J. While programming the unit, uninvolved equipment and personnel must remain clear from the unit.

PROGRAM UPDATE
With the unit prepared as described above, carefully proceed with the following steps in this section to
update the controller and the display. **NOTE: The controller and the display must be updated
together**. The new update will apply to the controller and then to the display. If not updated correctly,
an error will show on the display.

A. Factory reset the controller and load the firmware using Heil programming training document WI-21003.
B. Load the NEW 109-0XXX program that corresponds to the controller and update using instructions in
Heil programming training document WI-21-003 located in the dealer portal.
C. Turn the ignition switch to OFF to ensure the controller turns off (no LED lights).
D. Turn the ignition switch to ON and verify LED lights on both sides of the controller are blinking blue.
E. Load the NEW 109-0XXX program that corresponds to the display and update using instructions in Heil
programming training document WI-21-003 located in the dealer portal.
F. Turn the ignition switch to OFF to shut down the controller and the display.
G. Turn the ignition switch to ON and match the unit options to settings noted in Section 2.I of this notice.
H. Calibrate the unit. For assistance on the calibration password call Heil Technical Services.

UPDATING THE CONTROLLER/DISPLAY PROGRAMS

From the home screen, select Service and scroll to the right twice to access Multiplex Inputs. If the controller
detects the SA number, the corresponding Switch Bank will show “INSTALLED”. See Figure 1.

If the controller does not detect the SA number of a Switch Bank previously installed, the Switch Bank will
display “ERROR” and the Switch Bank Communications Error banner will appear. See Figure 2.

Select UNINSTALL SWB or JS to clear the “ERROR” to “OFF” if a Switch Bank has been removed permanently
by a certified technician. See Figure 3.

If the controller detects the SA number for the Switch Bank after an “ERROR” has occurred, “WARNING” will
be displayed on the screen. Select Acknowledge ERROR to clear the warning and “INSTALLED” will be
displayed on the screen. See Figure 4.

If the controller detects the joystick CAN Address, “INSTALLED” will be shown. See Figure 5.

If the controller does not detect the joystick CAN Address of a joystick previously installed, “ERROR” will be
displayed, and the Joystick Communications Error banner will appear at the bottom of the screen. See Figure
6.

Select UNINSTALL SWB or JS to clear the “ERROR” to “OFF” if the joystick is permanently uninstalled by a
certified technician. See Figure 7.

If the controller detects the CAN Address for the joystick after an “ERROR” has occurred, “WARNING” will be
displayed on the screen. Select Acknowledge ERROR to clear the warning and “INSTALLED” will be displayed
on the screen. See Figure 8.

If a Switch Bank and a joystick simultaneously lose communications with the controller, the below error will
display on the screen. See Figure 9.
