Repair Bulletin: This repair bulletin provides instructions on addressing a possible customer concern regarding the operation of
Tesla vehicles. These instructions should only be performed by trained professionals.

This Service Document supersedes SB-23-20-001 R2, dated 8-Aug-23. This new revision, R3, updates the parts list
and special tools list, and adds steps to use Toolbox 3 to check the passenger airbag type configuration. Each content
change is marked by a vertical line in the left margin. Discard the previous version and replace it with this one.

Condition
When certain Model 3 and Model Y vehicles receive a different Occupant Classification System (OCS) in their front
passenger seats during vehicle servicing, they may require safety vent type front passenger airbags to maintain
compatibility between the front passenger seat and the front passenger airbag.
NOTE: The performance of currently-installed front passenger airbag and front passenger seat are not affected.
This procedure is required to ensure continued performance of the front passenger airbag only when the front
passenger seat’s OCS is being replaced as part of servicing to replace the front passenger seat or its subcomponents.

Procedure
WARNING: Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) components can be hazardous if not handled properly
(refer to Airbag and Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) Precautions; Model 3, Model Y).
1. Use Toolbox 3 to check the passenger airbag type configuration:
NOTE: An alternative method is to check the front passenger airbag part number and confirm if a
configuration update is needed per the Parts Catalog.
a. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle (refer to Service Manual procedure; Model 3, Model Y).
b. Click the Dashboards tab, search for “infotainment”, click Infotainment Dashboard > Vehicle
Configuration, and then click Read Config (Figure 1).

Click Run and allow the routine to complete. Click X at the top right of the window to exit once the routine
is complete (Figure 2).

d. Scroll down to “passengerAirbagType” and confirm the configuration is “FULL_SUPPRESSION”
(Figure 3).

e. Disconnect the laptop from the vehicle (refer to Service Manual procedure; Model 3, Model Y).
2. On the vehicle touchscreen, touch Controls (vehicle icon) > Software, and then scroll down to display the vehicle
firmware version.
•

If the vehicle is operating with a firmware version 2023.2.11 or later, continue this procedure.

•

If the vehicle is operating with a firmware version earlier than 2023.2.11, update to version 2023.2.11 or
later (refer to Service Manual procedure 00020003; Model 3, Model Y), and then continue this procedure.

3. Replace the front passenger airbag with a new safety vent type airbag (part number 1077823-00-G or later) (refer
to Service Manual procedure 20010302; Model 3, Model Y).
4. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle (refer to Service Manual procedure; Model 3, Model Y).
5. Click the Actions tab, search for “PROC_PAB_X-RETROFIT”, and then click Passenger Airbag Type Retrofit
(Figure 4).

6. Click Run and allow the routine to complete. Click X at the top right of the window to exit once the routine is
complete (Figure 5).

7. Disconnect the laptop from the vehicle (refer to Service Manual procedure; Model 3, Model Y).
