Outer Body Symptom – Whistling Noise from the Area of the Cowl Frame A-Pillar and Roof
at Speeds Greater than Highway Speeds (SY 19/24)

Concerns:

Windshield

Symptom:

Whistling noise from the area of the cowl frame A-pillar and roof at speeds greater than highway
speeds.

Cause:

A joint that is too large between the windshield and glass roof at the level of the A-pillar can lead to insufficient preloading of the sealing lip of the joint seal, thereby causing noises.

Remedial
Action:

Determine the distance between the windshield and roof module using a feeler gauge and replace the
windshield depending on the test result.
Information
Please note that the windshield should only be replaced in this case, although it can generally be reinstalled after removal in accordance with the specifications of the Workshop Manual.

Determining distance between the windshield and roof module and replacing windshield if necessary
Work Procedure: 1

Determine distance  Gap between windshield
and roof -A- between windshield  Gap between
windshield and roof -1- and roof module  Gap

cowl frame and roof) at multiple points over entire
length  Gap between windshield and roof -B- using
a feeler gauge.

Assessment
Distance  Gap between windshield and roof
-A- is at most 3.8 mm/ 0.15 in throughout.

Action
The complaint is not due to too large a distance
between the windshield and roof module and
must be localized elsewhere.
End of remedial action.

-A- is in places or continuously greater than
3.8 mm/ 0.15 in.

Replace windshield.

IMPORTANT: Glaze the new windshield along
the A-pillar higher in order to create a smaller
distance (within the tolerance limits) between
the windshield and roof module.

Go to  2.

Once the adhesive has hardened, check again whether the distance between the windshield and roof
module is at most 3.8 mm/ 0.15 in over the entire length.
