Technical Background
If any of the below conditions occur, this TSB does not apply.
 Foreign bodies between brake disc and brake pad, such as small stones, grit, or sand.
 Un-ground or corroded friction materials.
 Brake discs or brake pads are close to their wear limit. (Front brake disc wear limit: 28mm. Front
brake pads wear limit with backing plate and dampening sheet: 7mm.)
 Metallic deposits from disc material in brake pad
(Figure1).

Production Solution
From week 25/2011 (June 20, 2011) brake discs, brake carriers, and brake pads with noise insulation.

Service
1. Confirm the customer’s vehicle was produced before June 20, 2011 and has PR-1LJ (29.5MM discs).
 If it was produced after this date, this TSB does not apply to the vehicle.
 If it does not have PR-1LJ, this TSB does not apply to the vehicle.
 If it has PR-1LJ with 30mm front discs (see ETKA), this TSB does not apply to this vehicle.
 If it has PR-1ZT, this TSB has been performed and should not be performed again.

 After this both this TSB and the SVM update are performed on vehicles built up to June 20, 2011
with PR 1LJ with 29.5mm front discs, the PR code will change to PR-1ZT.

3. Install parts kit with part number 8K0698998. The kit includes the following components:
 1 set of brake pads with wear indicator for disc brakes
 2 front brake discs
 2 brake carriers
 4 hexagonal collar bolts
 2 hexagonal countersunk screws
Tip: New brake pads must be securely glued to the calipers.

4. Apply a thin coat of anti-seize (G 052560A2) lubricant
to the guide pins of the new caliper carrier prior to
installing the new brake pads (Figure 5). Only apply
this lubricant to the section of the guide pins that will
be contacted by the brake pads.

5. Follow all instructions in the attached TSB, 2011732 00 Software Management (SVM), operating
instructions, to update the vehicles front brake PR code data using SVM action code listed in the
table below. Use Audi Flashing >> Software Version Management (SVM) >> SVM – Direct input:
SVM code for vehicle conversion.
6. Road test the vehicle to seat the breaks and to verify that the noise has been eliminated.

This Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) details the general process for carrying out a Software Version Management
(SVM) software update for any TSB or Update.
Troubleshooting information is included in the Additional Information section.
Please refer to the upcoming TSBs covering detailed aspects of SVM. They will be listed under group “99”.

Technical Background
SVM was developed with the main goal of ensuring each Audi vehicle has the correct electronic control units with
the correct software versions installed when it leaves the dealership repair facility.

SVM is a feature of GFF that has a subset of
functions or components as seen in Figure 1. These
functions are explained below. A VAS 5051B, VAS
5052A, or VAS 6150(A/B/C) diagnostic tool is
required to read out the vehicle control unit data and
send it to the SVM server (also called an “SVM
communication”).

1. SVM – Specified/actual comparison
Goal: This function is designed to ensure all electronic control units installed in the vehicle have the correct
part numbers, software versions, coding and parameterization. It will not suggest a control unit software
update. During this SVM communication, the part numbers and software versions of the actual control units
installed in the vehicle will be sent to the SVM servers. This “actual” data is then compared to the “specified”
data in the SVM database for a particular vehicle. The specified data stored on the SVM servers is also
referred to as the vehicle “reference”.
What an SVM Spec/Actual can do:
• Document any changes to an electronic control unit’s hardware/software part numbers, hardware/software
versions, and provide feedback to the user if these changes are accepted or rejected.
• When new parts are installed, it will also calculate coding changes or parameterization changes. If a
“hardware replacement suggestion” is given, then a conflict exists with the vehicle reference for that
control unit (i.e. SVM expects a different part number or software version for the control unit in question).
