Technical Background
All new replacement power steering control units (J500) must be coded and parameterized using online SVM
spec/actual or an SVM code. If the SVM spec/actual returns a response of “Check Hardware”, then the SVM
code is required to code and parameterize the new replacement control unit.
The SVM code can be found in Parts Bulletin 9-97, which is available online through ETKA. To access Parts
Bulletin 9-97:
1. Right-click on one of the steering
gear entries on the list to open a
shortcut menu. The steering gear
entry has a note that says “note
bulletin: (9-97)” (Figure 1).

2. Choose “GP bulletin” from the shortcut menu.
3. In the window that opens, download the bulletin by clicking the arrow icon to the left of the bulletin name
(Figure 2).

Alternatively, Parts Bulletin 9-97 can be accessed through INFOLINE:
1. Click on the “INFOLINE” tab from the main navigation bar in ETKA (Figure 3).

2. After INFOLINE opens, select the
“Technology” tab, set the make to
“Audi”, then choose “GP bulletins”
(Figure 4).

When replacing the power steering control units (J500), online coding and parameterization must first be
attempted using an SVM spec/actual comparison. If the SVM spec/actual returns a response of “Check
Hardware”, then it is possible one of the SVM codes listed below is required to code and parameterize the new
replacement control unit.
Tip: The SVM Exchange Code (XCHG44A001) may be required.
