Summary

SITUATION
A limited amount of Model Year 2023 (MY23) vehicles were produced with Smart Opener control units set too sensitively. The
Smart Opener is part of the Comfort Access feature, enabling to open the trunk lid or tailgate using the “foot kicking” motion
beneath the rear bumper.
When walking past the rear of the vehicle with a valid ID transmitter, the trunklid may open or close
unintentionally. The control unit for contactless trunklid opening (smart-opener control unit) interprets
passing by as a “foot kick” signal. Normally, the trunklid should only open or close after the “foot kick” motion
beneath the rear bumper.
Note: To activate contact-free trunklid opening, the foot must be moved under the center of the bumper and
then withdrawn immediately.
Do not deliver to a customer, a New, Certified Pre-Owned or Used vehicle subject to a Delivery Stop,
until the vehicle is repaired. Do not use or sell replacement equipment/parts subject to a Delivery
Stop.
CORRECTION
Replace the contactless trunklid (SMO) smart-opener control unit.
PROCEDURE
1. Replace the control unit for contactless trunklid opening as described in the repair instructions “Replacing the control unit for
contactless trunk opening (after vehicle diagnosis) 61 35 741 | REP-REP-P-6135741-G60”.
2. Perform a sleep cycle until the hazard warning switch light goes out, this can take up to 30 minutes.
3. Check the functionality of Contact-free trunk lid opening.
Note: Control unit parameters will be automatically transferred upon vehicle wakeup, updating the vehicle
software is not necessary for this repair.
Note: After replacing the control unit for contactless trunklid opening, the close-range radar sensors DO
NOT need to be calibrated. Calibration is only necessary if the position of the radar sensor changes; for
example, when removing the sensor or when the bumper needs to be painted.

use screws, nuts, and seals, which must be replaced or installed (according to the ISTA repair
instructions/ETK/AIR), are to be selected from the Electronic Parts Catalog, and/or other approved BMW
resources, according to the respective vehicle type. Invoice these items separately under the Repair Code
listed in this bulletin.
