Some customers may comment the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is ON, multiple
diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are set, the vehicle may not start, and/or have blown
fuses. The harness branch to the EBCM may be damaged from abrasion.
Cause
The EBCM body wiring harness offset clip may not be positioned correctly, allowing the
harness to rub on the transmission mounting bolt.
Correction
Service Procedure:
Perform underhood EBCM harness inspection for
damage, reposition harness, or repair harness if
needed.

1. Open the hood and locate the electronic brake
control module (EBCM) harness branch down
behind the radiator surge tank, near the brake
pressure modulator valve (BPMV) and frame/strut
tower.

Caution: Loosen surge tank filler cap slightly to relieve
pressure before removing hoses.
4. Clamp off and remove both small upper radiator
surge tank hoses (1).

2. Inspect the body harness for a minimum 10 mm
clearance (1) from the edge of bolt heads or clips.
The Body Harness clip (2) must be at a 90 degree
angle from the frame and not clocked toward the
front of the vehicle.
• If no interference or harness damage noticed,
refer to Diagnostic Starting Point - Vehicle in SI.
• If interference or harness damage noticed,
proceed to step 3, and refer to Wiring Repairs in
SI for damaged wiring.
3. Disconnect the 12 V battery. Refer to Battery
Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
in SI.

5. Remove the radiator surge tank retaining clip (1),
and relocate the tank for access to the harness
location. Refer to Radiator Surge Tank

6. Relocate, or slide up, the braided cover on the
adjacent brake line for a better view of the body
harness contact area.

Note: Leave the upward curved part of the harness clip
intact for harness support.
9. Cut the upper part of the tie strap (1) fastening the
body harness to the frame mounting clip.
10. Move the body harness away from the frame and
clip to access the clip mounting nut.
11. Remove the barrel connector from the top of the
harness clip stud.
12. Remove the harness clip nut from the stud.
Tip: Use a stubby 10 mm wrench or flex-head
ratcheting wrench.

7. Remove the upper body mounting bolt (1) from the
brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) clip (2).
Caution: Do not move the BPMV to the point of
stressing or bending the brake lines.
8. The BPMV can be moved slightly to provide
clearance/access to the harness clip.

13. Remove the harness clip (1) from the vehicle.

19. Install a second tie strap (1) to the harness
securing it to the nearby black rectangular clip (2).
Trim off the excess.
20. Reposition the braided brake line cover.

14. Insert a suitable heavy duty tie strap (1) through
the rectangular slot in the clip, do not fasten.
15. Install the clip with tie strap to the mounting stud on
the vehicle.
Tip:
Use a magnetic extended tool to position nut on stud.
16. Install the clip nut and tighten the clip down to
9 Nm (80 in lbs)
Important: Ensure the clip is 90 degrees, straight out
from the frame. Use a suitable tool to hold the clip from
turning during installation.
17. Install the barrel connector to the top of the
harness clip stud.
18. While holding the EBCM body harness branch in
position with maximum all around clearance,
secure the tie strap to the harness. Trim off the
excess.

21. Reposition the brake pressure modulator valve
(BPMV) and install the upper body mounting
bolt (1).
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 22 Y (16 lb ft).

22. Reposition the coolant surge tank and reconnect
both small upper hoses.
23. Install the coolant reservoir mounting clip.
