Condition

Some customers may comment on one or more of the following conditions:
• Hesitation
• Reduced power
• Engine stalling
• Poor transmission shifting performance
• Door locks cycling without input
• Loss of communication from various modules
• No start
• Erratic activity with interior lights and cluster gauges
• Engine will rev without input
• Arcing
• HVAC control inoperative or erratic
• Smoke
• Loss of steering assist

Cause

This condition may be caused by the battery positive cable not routed correctly making
contact with the alternator and/or water pump.

Correction

Inspect the battery cable for contact with the alternator or power steering pulleys.

⇒ If contact is found. Replace the battery positive cable harness.

For this example, it was found that the cable harness
clip was not installed in the housing properly adding
stress to the cable and A/C line.

For this example, it was found that the cable harness
was not installed in the clip properly which resulted in
the harness sagging downwards and contacting the
pump pulley.
⇒ If damage to the clip is found. Replace the clip.

As shown in the graphics above, it was found that the
cable harness retainer was damaged which resulted in
the harness contacting the pump pulley.
⇒ If no damage to the harness is found, replace the
retainer.

The retainer was damaged causing the cable harness
to contact the alternator.
⇒ If no damage to the harness is found, replace the
retainer.

Refer to Battery Positive Cable Replacement in the
Service Manual.

Verify the is proper clearance between the Batter
positive cable and the alternator and water pump.
