Service Update for Inventory and Customer Vehicles

220 Amp Generator Fuse Block Corrosion

Expires with Base Warranty
MODELS:
2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD

2015 GMC Sierra 2500 HD

Equipped with 220 Amp Generator RPO KW5
This service update includes vehicles in dealer inventory and customer vehicles that return to

the dealership for any reason. This bulletin will expire at the end of the involved vehicle's New

Vehicle Limited Warranty period.

PURPOSE

This bulletin provides a service procedure to relocate the separate 250 Amp fuse into the prefuse assembly on top of the vehicle battery on certain 2015 model year Chevrolet Silverado

2500 HD and GMC Sierra 2500 HD vehicles equipped with a 220 Amp Generator (RPO KW5).

These vehicles may, due to corrosion at the ends of the fuse, experience a resistance build-up

that does not allow current to flow through the fuse, resulting in the generator not being able to

charge the vehicle battery. The battery symbol may appear on the IP and a message in the

driver information center will show “Service Battery Charging System.” As the battery loses

charge, the vehicle may stall or not be able to start when the battery goes below 11.3 Volts.

Depending on the state of charge of the battery when this occurs, the vehicle may have between

50-85 minutes before any potential stall condition.

This service procedure should be completed as soon as possible on involved vehicles

currently in dealer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealer for any type

of service during the New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage period.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

All involved vehicles are identified by VIN in the Global Warranty Management System –

Investigate Vehicle History Application. Dealership technicians should always check this site to

confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections and/or repairs. It is

important to routinely use this tool to verify eligibility because not all similar vehicles may be

involved regardless of description or option content.

Additionally, a list of involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory is available on the “Service

Update Bulletin Information” link under the “Service” tab in GM GlobalConnect (US) or attached

to the GlobalConnect message (Canada) used to release this bulletin. Customer vehicles that

return for service, for any reason, and are still covered under the vehicle's base warranty should

also be checked for vehicle eligibility.

PART INFORMATION

Parts required to complete this service update are to be obtained from General Motors Customer

Care and Aftersales (GMCC&A). Please refer to your “involved vehicles listing” before ordering

parts. Normal orders should be placed on a DRO = Daily Replenishment Order. In an

emergency situation, parts should be ordered on a CSO = Customer Special Order.

Note: With the new parts design, the 250 Amp fuse which was previously located on the

cables (1) has now been re-located in the fuse battery distribution block (2).

1. Place vehicle in stall with a hoist.

2. Remove the upper intake manifold sight shield. Refer to Upper Intake Manifold Sight

Shield Replacement. SI.

4. Remove the battery positive cable. Refer to Battery Positive Cable Replacement (Single

Tip: Shown in the graphic above, for easier access to the positive battery cable fastener at the

junction box, disconnect the X121 connector (1).

5. Mount the new fuse battery distribution unit engine compartment block by snapping the

block onto the battery lip.

Note: If disconnected during previous step, reconnect the X121 connector (1) after installation

of the new cable.

6. Install the new battery positive cable, except for the fuse block and negative battery

connections. Refer to Battery Positive Cable Replacement (Single Battery) or Auxiliary

Battery Positive Cable Replacement - Battery to Battery Relay K4B in SI.

7. Position the battery positive cable eyelet (1) to the fuse block rear post, at #1 stamping.

8. Remove the generator battery control wiring harness (1). Refer to Generator Battery

Control Wiring Harness Replacement (L96, LC8) in SI.

Note: Position the rearward generator harness eyelet (2) on rear post at stamping #2, on top of

the positive battery cable eyelet (1) at stamping #1. Position the forward harness eyelet (3)

on the forward post at stamping #5.

9. Install the new generator battery control wiring harness. Refer to Generator Battery

Control Wiring Harness Replacement (L96, LC8) in SI.

Tip: Shown in the graphic below, for some vehicle models the cable connection at the starter

and the retainer connection to the frame may be easier accomplished through the right

wheelhouse liner.

10. Complete the installation of the fuse battery distribution unit engine compartment block.

Refer to Fuse Battery Distribution Unit Engine Compartment Block Replacement in SI.

11. Reinstall the upper intake manifold sight shield. Refer to Upper Intake Manifold Sight

Shield Replacement. SI.
