Unable to Clear BCM DTCs After Completing Repair

Condition
In some situations a Service Technician may encounter a condition where they are unable to clear certain Body
Control Module (BCM) DTCs after completing a repair.
The Technician may incorrectly assume that the BCM has been damaged.

Cause
When the BCM detects a short to ground on a High Side Driver (switch to power), or a short to voltage on a Low Side
Driver (switch to ground), the BCM will set one or more DTCs and will stop attempting to drive the affected device in
order to protect itself from electrical overstress.
The following is a list of DTCs that might be set and result in the need to follow the Correction procedure.

Correction
When the short to ground or voltage has been repaired the BCM must be “reset” in order for it to attempt to drive the
affected device. Failure to reset the BCM may result in the Technician not being able to verify the repair, which may
result in misdiagnosis and unnecessary replacement of the BCM.
If this condition as described is encountered, perform the following:
1. Turn OFF the ignition. Retained accessory power should be allowed to time out, or simply open the driver door.
2. Disconnect the battery for 30 seconds. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in SI.
3. Connect the battery.
4. Turn ON the ignition.
5. Use the scan tool to clear all DTCs.
6. Exercise the repaired output in order to validate the repair.
