Condition
On some Semi vehicles, the Efficiency Drive Axle (EDA) and Torque Drive Axle (TDA) air spring to trailing arm
interfaces may have gaps. The gaps may cause uneven loading of the air spring, and may reduce spring service life.
Correction
Inspect the vehicle for symptoms, and if present, replace the air spring. If symptoms remain after air spring
replacement, rework the trailing arm contact surface to reduce the gap.

Procedure
1. Chock the LH front wheel.
2. Set a feeler gauge or a gap and flush gauge to measure 1.75 mm.
3. At the LH EDA air spring, check the gap between the air spring and trailing arm. If any of the following negative
conditions occur, record that the air spring must be replaced.
•
The gap between the air spring piston outer edge and the trailing arm is greater than 1.75 mm (Figure 1).

4. Repeat step 3 for the RH EDA air spring, the LH TDA air spring, and the RH TDA air spring.

5. If no air springs are recorded to need replacement, go to step 16 and use correction S022331004.
6. For the first air spring recorded to need replacement, remove the old air spring from the vehicle (refer to service
manual procedures 3103XXXXXX (EDA) or 3103YYYYYY (TDA) for guidance).
7. Put a new air spring into position on the trailing arm and top mount, install the nuts onto the air spring top mount
(Figure 4) and trailing arm (Figure 5) studs, and tighten (torque 15 Nm)

8. Check the gap between the air spring and trailing arm, and for each of the negative conditions described, use a
paint pen to mark the general location of the high point on the trailing arm.
•
The gap between the air spring piston outer edge and the trailing arm is greater than 1.75 mm
(Figure 1) - The high point of the trailing arm is on the side of the air spring opposite the gap.
NOTE: There may be two locations where the piston outer edge contacts the trailing arm.
•
The air spring piston face does not contact the trailing arm (Figure 2):
o
If the gap is at the air spring stud, the high point of the trailing arm is where the air spring piston inner
shoulder or outer edge contacts the trailing arm.
NOTE: There may be two or more locations where the piston inner shoulder or outer edge contacts
the trailing arm.
o

If the gap is everywhere except where the air spring stud fastens to the trailing arm, the high point of the
trailing arm is where the air spring stud fastens to the trailing arm. Mark both sides of the trailing arm at
the air spring stud through hole.
The gap between the air spring piston inner shoulder and the trailing arm is greater than 1.75 mm
(Figure 3) -The high point of the trailing arm is on the side of the air spring opposite the gap.
9. If no marks to the trailing arm were necessary, go to step 11.

10. If mark(s) were applied to the trailing arm, perform these substeps:
a. Remove the nuts that attach the air spring to the trailing arm (Figure 6) and top mount (Figure 7), and remove
the air spring from the vehicle.

b. Use a grinder to flatten the high points as indicated by the marks (Figure 8).
TIP: Use a pocket ruler on edge to help verify grinding progress.
NOTE: If the high point is at the through hole for the air spring stud, grind the area at the hole.
NOTE: You may have to repeat grinding several times.

Put the air spring into position on the trailing arm and top mount, install the nuts onto the air spring studs, and
tighten (torque 15 Nm) (Figures 4, and 5).
d. Check the gap again (Figures 1, 2, and 3)
NOTE: If grinding makes no change to the gap, then the high point is now at a different location than the
area ground down.
•
Gap is still greater than 1.75 mm – Return to step 10.a.
•
Gap is less than 1.75 mm – Continue to step 10.e.
e. Remove the nuts that attach the air spring to the trailing arm and top mount, and remove the air spring from
the vehicle (Figures 6 and 7).
f.
Spray black self-etching primer to the ground area of the trailing arm, and allow to dry.

11. Install the air spring completely (refer to service manual procedures3103XXXXXX (EDA) or 3103YYYYYY (TDA)
for guidance).
12. Repeat steps 6 through 11 for all air springs recorded to need replacement.
13. Set suspension to standard.
14. Set parking brake.
15. Disable Jack Mode.
16. Remove chocks from the LH front wheel, and then enter the appropriate correction into the service visit.
