Front Suspension Noise While Turning

SYMPTOM
There is a dull creaking, rubbing, popping, or clicking noise coming from the front of the vehicle while turning at low
speeds.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
The bump stop contacts the top of the front damper body.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Apply Shin-Etsu silicone grease to the bump stops on the front dampers.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1. Open the hood and remove the front damper dust caps. Install the chassis ear clip on the top of the damper shaft on
each side.

2. Add weight to the vehicle by putting the technician in the driver’s seat and another person in the front passenger’s seat,
while leaving the rear seats empty.
3. Position the vehicle on a smooth flat surface, such as a shop floor (not asphalt or rough cement). With the vehicle
running, the transmission in Park, and the brake pedal depressed: turn the steering wheel left to full lock, and then right
to full lock. Do this 2-3 times while listening for a noise:


If a creaking, rubbing, popping, or clicking noise is heard when turning left or right, continue to the REPAIR
PROCEDURE.



If no noise is heard, or a clunking noise is heard, this bulletin does not apply. Continue with normal
troubleshooting.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Position the lift pads under the vehicle’s front and rear support points, then lift the vehicle.
NOTE:


Raise the lift a few inches and rock the vehicle gently to be sure it is firmly supported.



Raise the lift to its full height and inspect the vehicle support points for solid contact with the lift pads.

2. Remove the front wheels.

3. Lift the front damper dust cover to expose the damper shaft and the bump stop.

4. Dispense approximately 0.5 g, or about a finger-tip dab of Shin-Etsu silicone grease. Apply the grease around the
bottom of the bump stop (shown in blue).
NOTE: Make sure to wipe off any grease from the shaft.

5. Install the damper dust cover.

6. Repeat steps 3-5 for the other front damper.

7. Install the front wheels and torque the lug nuts to 108 Nꞏm (80 lb-ft).
