PERSONAL INJURY
To avoid injury from hot surfaces, wear protective gloves, or allow engine to cool before
removing any component.
1. Turn ignition OFF, apply parking brake, chock wheels, and perform any other applicable safety steps.

ELECTRICAL SHOCK
To avoid injury from electrical shock, use care when connecting battery cables. The
magnetic switch studs are at battery voltage.

Disconnect batteries.
Open the hood.
If necessary, remove bumper for access.
Refer to Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) procedures.

FIRE HAZARD
Do not power wash or steam clean the engine bay in the area of vehicle electrical
components, unless specified by vehicle manuals or service literature. Power
washing/steam cleaning can permanently damage these components, which could result in
fire, personal injury, or property damage.
2. Steam clean the engine where the rocker cover meets the camshaft housing.
3. Remove air filter housing. Refer to OEM procedures.
4. If equipped, remove air compressor resonator. Refer to OEM procedures.
5. Remove the rocker cover.
Refer to section "Removal of the Rocker Cover" in the Gen 5 DD15 Platform Workshop Manual.

6. Remove the fuel injector wiring harnesses.

7. Remove the engine brake return spring bar from the camshaft housing.
Refer to section "Removal of the Engine Brake Return Springs" in the Gen 5 DD15 Platform Workshop Manual.

8. Remove the exhaust rocker shaft assembly.
Refer to section "Removal of the Exhaust Rocker Shaft Assembly" in the Gen 5 DD15 Platform Workshop
Manual.

9. Completely disassemble the exhaust rocker shaft assembly.
10. Lubricate the bushings in the new exhaust rocker arms with clean engine oil.
Note: If the drilled exhaust rocker arm kit came with adjusting screws and lock nuts already installed on the
rocker arms, skip to step 16.

11. Loosely install the adjusting screws in the new exhaust rocker arms. Make sure the adjusting screws are
threaded all the way into the rocker arms.

12. Loosely install the locknuts onto the exhaust rocker arm adjusting screws. Do not fully tighten the locknuts.
Note: Plastic rocker arm spacers may vary in color.

13. Reassemble the rocker shaft assembly with the exhaust rocker arms, and spacers in correct locations. See
graphics below.

14. Using the exhaust rocker arm lifter/spacer tool, install the exhaust rocker shaft assembly onto the camshaft caps.
Refer to section "Installation of the Exhaust Rocker Shaft Assembly" in the Gen 5 DD15 Platform Workshop
Manual.

15. Install engine brake return spring bar onto the camshaft housing.
Refer to section "Installation of the Engine Brake Return Springs" in the Gen 5 DD15 Platform Workshop
Manual.
NOTE:
Only adjust the exhaust valves and engine brakes. Intake valve adjustment is not required and not included in
the labor reimbursement for this campaign.

16. Adjust exhaust valves and engine brakes.
Refer to section "Setting the Valve and Engine Brake Lash" in the Gen 5 DD15 Platform Workshop Manual.

17. Install fuel injector wiring harnesses.
Refer to section "Installation of the Front Fuel Injector Wiring Harness" in the Gen 5 DD15 Platform Workshop
Manual.
Refer to section "Installation of the Rear Fuel Injector Wiring Harness" in the Gen 5 DD15 Platform Workshop
Manual.

18. Install the rocker cover.
Refer to section "Installation of the Rocker Cover" in the Gen 5 DD15 Platform Workshop Manual.

19. If removed, install the air compressor resonator. Refer to Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) procedures.

If operating an engine in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.
Do not modify or tamper with the exhaust system or emission control system.

PERSONAL INJURY
To avoid injury before starting and running the engine, ensure the vehicle is parked on a
level surface, parking brake is set, and the wheels are blocked.

ENGINE EXHAUST
To avoid injury from inhaling engine exhaust, always operate the engine in a well-ventilated
area. Engine exhaust is toxic.
22. Start engine (key ON, engine ON) and check for oil leaks.
23. If removed, install bumper. Refer to OEM procedures.
24. Close the hood.
NOTE: Once complete, perform the below steps:

25. Apply parking brake, chock wheels, and perform any other applicable safety steps.
Note: You MUST use DiagnosticLink® Professional 8.18 with Service Pack 1 (or higher) when reprogramming.

26. Begin the process by connecting DiagnosticLink® to the vehicle. Make sure that the modules, ACM, CPC
MCM, and TCM (if equipped) are connected.
NOTICE:
BEFORE beginning reprogramming, make sure the VIN is correct in the modules, ACM, CPC, MCM,
and TCM (if equipped). If the VIN is not correct in these modules, you will get an error message when
attempting to reprogram.

27. Make sure the VIN is correct in all modules, ACM, CPC, MCM, and TCM (if equipped), by looking at the
“Identification” screen in DiagnosticLink®. If any VIN is incorrect, you can correct the VIN under the “Actions”
drop-down menu in DiagnosticLink® by selecting the “Check VIN Synchronization” item. Select “Start” from this
panel and follow the prompts. Follow all prompts to cycle the key until the routine completes. When
synchronization is complete, turn ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF) and continue the download process.

28. On the ‘Identification’ screen, check the current software. Listed below is the MINIMUM level required. See
Figure 1 for an example of the ‘Identification’ screen.

29. Navigate to the Parameters window on the left-hand side bar using, wait for parameters to be read.
30. Select ‘Program Device’ option along the left side of the DiagnosticLink® screen.
31. Select the ‘Add’ button in the lower left corner of the DiagnosticLink ® screen and enter the engine serial number.
Then click the ‘Connect to Server’ button in the bottom left corner of the DiagnosticLink screen to continue the
download. Select ‘Connected unit’, then select ‘Next’. See Figures 1, 2, and 3.

32. Program the CPC. Note: The ACM and MCM may require reprogramming for compatibility.
33. When programming is complete, click the ‘Finish’ button and perform the following to allow the modules to
synchronize with each other:

Disconnect the USB Link at the 9-pin vehicle diagnostic port.
Turn the vehicle ignition OFF and wait one minute.
Turn the vehicle ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF) and wait one minute.
Turn the vehicle ignition OFF and wait one minute.
Turn the vehicle ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF) and wait one minute.
Reconnect the USB Link, reconnect DiagnosticLink to the MCM, ACM, CPC, and TCM (if
equipped) to confirm the proper software.

34. Update the server by clicking the ‘Connect to Server’ button in the bottom left corner of the
DiagnosticLink screen.
NOTICE:
CHECK with the customer if Auto Elevate can be enabled. Auto Elevate can prevent Aftertreatment
System (ATS) issues.

35. Ask the customer if they would like Auto Elevate activated. REFERENCE Detroit Technical Service
letter 16TS-18 for full details on Auto Elevate.

36. Install base label WAR259 (if not already present) and a blank, black completion sticker WAR261. See
Completion Stickers section.

37. Repairs are complete. Note: The engine may idle at 700 RPM due to active Asymmetric Injection and will return
to idle speed of 600 RPM once Asymmetric Injection is inactive.

Upon completion of Field Service Campaign D23M1, clean a spot on the base label (Form WAR259), write
the Field Service Campaign Number D23M1 on a blank, completion sticker (Form WAR261), and attach
the completion sticker to the base label.
