Introduction:

Allison Transmission 4000 Series, 7-Speed transmissions have been built with two separate output shafts,

depending on if the transmission configuration contained a standard rear cover (non-retarder) output or the retarder

option. Non-retarder transmissions were built with a different output shaft assembly than that of the retarder

equipped transmissions. Refer to Figure 1 to compare former Non-Retarder Rear Cover Module P/N 29565367 to

the former Retarder Rear Cover Module P/N 29565402.

Output Shaft Assembly P/N 29566159 was originally designed for retarder applications and contains rotor splines

midway down the shaft. Bearing surfaces are different between the two shaft designs and require the use of

different bearings. Refer to Figure 2 for output shaft comparisons.

Allison is building all 4700, 4800 and 4900 Series transmissions with Output Shaft Assembly P/N 29566159. This

now “common” output shaft assembly is compatible with non-retarder transmission designs, as long as the unique

retarder shaft bearings are used. Figure 2 points out the smaller diameter used on the common Output Shaft

Assembly P/N 29566159 versus the former Output Shaft Assembly P/N 29566160.

Starting with serial number break points provided above, all 4700, 4800 and 4900 Series production units (whether

containing the retarder option or not) are built with the common Output Shaft Assembly P/N 29566159 and retarder

bearings (Front Bearing Assembly P/N 29505613 and Rear Bearing Assembly P/N 29544236).

Service Parts Availability:

Output Shaft Assembly P/N 29566160 has been cancelled from production and remains available for service until

PDC stock is depleted. Once Output Shaft Assembly P/N 29566160 is depleted from PDC inventory, orders will be

automatically fulfilled with Output Shaft Assembly P/N 29566159.

Important: It will be up to your Parts Manager or repair location to order the correct bearing assemblies (Front

Bearing Assembly P/N 29505613 and Rear Bearing Assembly P/N 29544236) to properly work with the Output

Shaft Assembly P/N 29566159. Refer to the Parts Catalog for the latest part numbers and history information.
Cross Reference Guide:

New 6th Generation engineering groups and rear cover module part numbers have been released to capture this

output shaft assembly change. Engineering groups in Table 1 show the former and current numbers associated

with this change.

Output shaft replacements for fielded 4000 Series, 7-Speed non-retarder transmissions built prior to serial number

break provided will use the common Output Shaft Assembly P/N 29566159 and bearings (Front Bearing Assembly

P/N 29505613 and Rear Bearing Assembly P/N 29544236).
