WMD4 – Checking Manual Transmission and Replacing it if Necessary (Workshop

Information:

During repairs involving the replacement of the transmission, the affected vehicles were installed with
a manual transmission in which an oil baffle plate was not installed inside the transmission due to an
assembly error by the transmission manufacturer.
The absence of an oil baffle plate can lead to insufficient lubrication and consequently higher wear on the
transmission components over the service life of the vehicle.

Action required: Check the manual transmission and replace, if required.

Position the vehicle on a lifting platform and raise it at the prescribed jacking points.  Workshop

Remove rear underbody panelling.  Workshop Manual '519419 Removing and installing cover for
rear underbody'
NOTE: There are 2 sections to WM 519419. Only the rear underbody needs to be removed in this
case.

Check both impressions  Checking manual transmission -1- and  Checking manual transmission -2on the manual transmission.

If the impressions "1/M" and "8" shown in
the illustration are present on the manual
transmission  Checking manual transmission
-Arrows-, the transmission must be replaced.
This applies irrespective of whether the
impression is present at position  Checking
manual transmission -1- or  Checking manual
transmission -2-. What is important here is the
combination of 1/M and 8 or vice versa. The
manual transmission must be replaced
in both cases. To do this, continue with step

The manual transmission does not need to be replaced. In this case, take photos of the
impressions and continue with step 4.

Lower the vehicle and remove it from the lifting platform.

Enter the campaign in the Warranty and Maintenance booklet. For warranty processing, see 

Please document the photos of the impressions on the manual transmission in WWS.

Information
After removal of the manual transmission, any required add-on parts must be converted to the new
manual transmission.

Removing manual transmission and installing a new one.

Bleed the clutch hydraulic system.  Workshop Manual '30010700 Bleeding the clutch system'

Lower the vehicle.

Prepare old manual transmission for shipping.

Drain transmission oil and dispose of it.

Clean manual transmission.

10 Enter the campaign in the Warranty and Maintenance booklet.
