Condition
Customer states: The painted surface of the rear lid beneath the tail lamp is chipped and/or peeling.
Workshop findings: The gap between the tail lamp and the rear lid is too small or non-existent causing contact
to the rear lid and damaging the painted surface. In some cases the corrosion protection is also compromised
and corrosion in the rear lid could be visually apparent.
Technical Background
Figure 1 shows a tail lamp to rear lid gap that is
insufficient.
Figure 1. Rear lid tail lamp with an insufficient gap to the
rear lid.
Insufficient clearance between the rear tail lamp and
the rear lid creates contact between the two and
damages the paint on the rear lid (figure 2).

Production Solution
The gap between the rear tail lamp and rear lid has
been optimized in production to eliminate contact
between the two (figure 3).

Service
Any damage to the painted surface and/or corrosion protective surface on the rear lid will need to be
repaired. Arrange this repair through your Audi
Certified Collision Center. Before releasing the vehicle for the
paint repair the buffers on the tail lamp will need to be modified to prevent subsequent paint damage.
1. Remove the tail lamp on the rear lid. The foam
buffers shown in figure 4 need to be carefully
removed. They will be repurposed.

2. Cut the original foam buffer into two equal pieces
and secure them to the positions on the tail lamp
shown in figure 5. Use a thin film double-sided
tape for reaffixing the foam buffer pieces to the
tail lamp housing (e.g. 3M™ 9088).
Figure 5. Foam buffer pieces reaffixed to the tail lamp
housing.
3. After installing the foam buffer pieces reinstall
the tail lamp and ensure that the appropriate gap
is now established and no contact between the
tail lamp and the rear lid exists on either side
(figure 6).
