Symptom/Vehicle Issue: Customer may experience a knocking, pinging or rattling
noise coming from the engine.
Customer Complaint/Technician Observation: In addition to the symptoms
mentioned above, there may or may not be a Mil-On condition associated with them.
Before performing any diagnostics, please refer to the inspection process listed below
in the Discussion section of this SOL.
Discussion: The following inspection process should be performed to ensure the
knock sensors on the engine are properly installed and the associated wiring
harnesses are properly routed and installed.
The engine has 3 knock sensors installed, front, middle and rear.
Please see images starting on page 2 for descriptions. A borescope may be
necessary to verify the information requested for the inspection procedure.

The front knock sensor (#5 – sensor body shown in pink, bracket and pigtail shown in
blue, the sensor assembly circled in red in Figure 1 below) has a pigtail attached to the
sensor. The sensor should be mounted to the engine with the pigtail pointing to the
rear of the engine. The pigtail has a retention clip that should be installed in the
bracket (yellow arrow).

The middle knock sensor (#4 shown in pink in Figure 1 above) only has a connector
(no pigtail) and the connector should be pointing down towards the oil pan.

The last inspection point is to verify that the main harness is routed BELOW the engine
oil temperature sensor (proper routine seen in the yellow circled area in Figure 2
below).
Figure 2 shows the proper sensor orientation for the front and middle

If any of the knock sensor orientations or harness routings are not as they are shown in
Figure 2, it is possible the knock sensors are not connected as they should be.
Disconnect the knock sensors, reinstall the knock sensors as necessary. Route the
harnesses/pigtails properly then reconnect the knock sensors.
Test drive the vehicle to see if the symptoms have been eliminated. If not, continue
with normal diagnostics for the symptoms.
