UPPER FUEL PUMP MODULE REPLACEMENT
This bulletin provides information associated with the ‘Fuel Pump Warranty Extension Program’ (WTY033) to
inspect the low-pressure fuel pump on 2018-2019MY Sorento (UMa) vehicles produced from March 31, 2017
through July 24, 2019. The low-pressure fuel pump in the subject vehicles may develop a fuel leak over time
and after prolonged exposure to extreme high temperature due to insufficient thickness of the fuel pump
port. The vehicle’s warranty for this issue will be extended from 5 years/60,000 miles to 15 years / unlimited
miles, whichever comes first, starting from the date the vehicle was first put into service. Follow the procedure
outlined in this publication to inspect the fuel pump port connection for a leak and, if necessary, replace the
upper fuel pump module in the subject vehicle.
NOTICE
A Technical Service Bulletin is a field fix repair program without customer notification that may be
performed during the warranty period. Any dealer requesting to perform this repair outside the
warranty period will require DPSM approval.

Inspection Procedure:
1.
Remove the second-row seat (A) by referring
to “Body (Interior and Exterior) → Rear Seat →
Rear Seat Assembly → Repair Procedures
(Second Row Seat Assembly)” in the applicable
Shop Manual on KGIS.

Remove the rear seat LH duct (B)

3.
Remove the seat cable bracket (C).

4.
Loosen the four (4) screws to remove the fuel
pump service cover (D).
IMPORTANT
If no access hole is visible, it may be
necessary to cut an access hole in the
carpet to gain access the fuel pump
service cover.

FUEL PUMP INSPECTION AND UPPER FUEL PUMP MODULE REPLACEMENT
Clean the fuel fump feed port in the area
shown using brake cleaner and blowing with
shop air.
Note: DO NOT attempt to touch/wipe the area
prior to completing inspection instructions. The
brake cleaner must be completely dissolved
before proceeding to the following steps.
6.
‘Start’ the engine allow to idle.
7.
Place the inspection paper under the
fuel
pump port as shown for ten (10) to fifteen (15)
seconds.
8.
Is a fuel leak present?
•
If the inspection paper remains dry and
no visible fuel leak is present (OK), then
no further action is required. Proceeed
to step 9.
•
If the inspection paper is moist and
fuel leak is present (NG), then shut the
engine ‘OFF’ and skip to the ‘Repair
Procedure’ on page 4.
9.
Shut the engine off.
10.
Reinstall all removed parts in the reverse order
of removal.
11.
Confirm normal vehicle operation.

Replacement Procedure:
1.
Release residual fuel pressure in the fuel lines
by referring to “Engine Control / Fuel System
→ Release Residual Pressure in Fuel Line” in
the applicable Shop Manual on KGIS.
2.
Remove the fuel pump control module (FPCM)
assembly (A) by referring to “Engine Control /
Fuel System → Fuel Delivery System → Fuel
Pump Control Module (FPCM) → Repair
Procedures” in the applicable Shop Manual on

Note: DO NOT discard the FPCM mounting
gasket. Required Tool: SST 09310 B8100
3.
Disconnect the upper fuel pump module plate
connector (B) and free the cable from the top
plate.

4.
Using a small flat head screw driver, carefully
remove the clip (C) securing the fuel dischage
hose (D).
IMPORTANT

During removal, ensure to not drop or
lose the discharge hose clip (C).
5.
Gently pull up on the fuel discharge hose
connector (D) to disconnect it from the lower
fuel pump module body.
Note: The new upper fuel pump module plate
includes a new discharge O-ring (E).

FUEL PUMP INSPECTION AND UPPER FUEL PUMP MODULE REPLACEMENT
Gently release the two (2) locking tab(s) on
opposite ends of the lower fuel pump module
boy using a small flat head screwdriver.
CAUTION
Tabs can break if pryed too far out or
with excessive force. If the tab(s)
break, the fuel pump assembly will
need to be replaced.
6b.
TECH TIP
Hold the upper fuel pump module
plate and gently pull upwards while
gently releasing the locking tabs. The
lower fuel pump module body will
drop down unlocking from the rods.
6c.
Separate the upper fuel pump module plate
from the lower body.
IMPORTANT
During removal, ensure to not drop or
lose the hose retaining clip from step
4 and pipe support springs, as they
will be reused on the new assembly
plate.
7.
Before installing the new upper fuel pump
module plate, confirm the location of both (2)
plate rod insertion points on the lower fuel
pump module body.

8a.
Install the new upper fuel pump module plate.
8b.
Align the rods to the insertion points on the
lower fuel pump module body and gently push
down to lock on the two (2) locking tabs.
Note: A click sound will be heard when the rods
have engaged the locking tabs.
8c.
Connect
the
discharge
hose and apply
pressure downward to insert.
Note: Confirm the O-ring is still inside the hose
connector.
8d.
Secure the discharge hose by inserting the
locking clip. Perform a light pull/push/pull to
confirm the discharge hose is locked on.
9.
Reconnect the fuel pump sender connector
and
ensure
the
cable
is
completely
inserted/secured to the retaining hook.
10.
Install the fuel pump module back to vehicle.
IMPORTANT
The fuel pump module mount seal
(from step 1) will be reused and is
NOT INCLUDED with the new fuel
pump module upper plate.
11.
Reinstall all other removed parts in the reverse
order of removal.
12.
Confirm normal vehicle operation.
