SUBJECT: New Genuine Subaru Replacement Battery
(SOA821B950)

INTRODUCTION:
This bulletin announces the availability of a new Genuine Subaru Replacement Battery introduced
to replace the current battery (SOA821B400) once current inventory is depleted. The new battery
(SOA821B950) has a higher capacity and is slightly different in size. When replacing an originally
equipped battery with the new SOA821B950 Genuine Subaru Replacement Battery, additional parts
and slight modifications will be required to ensure proper positioning and security. Please refer to the
work procedures outlined below.

SERVICE PROCEDURE / INFORMATION:
Please review the battery identification, charging, and testing information provided in Service
Bulletin 07-178-21 before performing any battery testing and/or charging. ALWAYS confirm
Midtronics equipment has the latest software available.
NOTE: The original battery holder, battery tray, and holding rods are to be reused.
STEP 1: Remove the battery as per the applicable Service Manual: Engine > STARTING/
CHARGING SYSTEMS > Battery > Removal

STEP 2: Install the NEW battery cover (82423AN000) to the replacement battery. Confirm the
bottom of the cover is aligned flush with the bottom of the battery.

STEP 3: Battery Installation
A. 2.5L Equipped Models ONLY: Install the battery as per the applicable Service Manual:
Engine > STARTING/CHARGING SYSTEMS > Battery > Installation. Proceed to Step 6.
B. 3.6L Equipped Models ONLY: Install the battery with spacer (82190AL000) to the rear
side of the battery tray. The spacer must be installed with the flat side against the battery
and the notched portion facing the bottom of the battery tray. See the images below.

Install the battery as per the applicable Service Manual: Engine > STARTING/CHARGING
SYSTEMS > Battery > Installation. Proceed to Step 4.
IMPORTANT NOTE: ALWAYS confirm the spacer fitment is flush when securing the battery with
the hold down and hold down rods.

STEP 4: Install the battery holder and holding rods onto the battery.
A. Torque the two holding rod mounting nuts to 7.5 N·m (5.5 ft-lbs. or 66 inch-lbs.).
B. Torque the positive terminal to 6 N·m (4.4 ft-lbs. or 53 inch-lbs.).
C. Torque the negative terminal to 7.5 Nm (5.5 ft.-lbs. or 66 inch-lbs.).
D. If the battery sensor is removed or disconnected torque to 6 Nm (4.4 ft.-lbs. or 53 inchlbs.) while supporting the sensor with the other hand as outlined in the applicable Service
Manual under: STARTING/CHARGING SYSTEMS> Battery Sensor.
NOTE: Confirm the battery holder is center mounted with the battery cables secured and routed
correctly.
