Subject: VAS 6160 Diagnostic Tablet Performance Enhancement

1.0 – Introduction
Certain VAS 6160 diagnostic tablet device performance issues may be the result of unfavorable
partitioning of the hard drive during the migration from Windows® XP to Windows 7. Examples are slow
application installations, slow application startups and navigation, GFF navigation hangs intermittently, and
longer update installations compared to other devices in service.
As part of our commitment to improve and support the use of VAS diagnostic devices in dealer workshops,
we are providing downloadable “alignment tool” software to optimize the performance of VAS 6160 devices
with Windows 7. This document describes the software download and execution process.

ATTENTION!
The alignment tool software described here is licensed for exclusive use on VAS 6160 with
Windows 7 installed from the VWGoA supplied DVDs ONLY!
DO NOT use the alignment tool software on VAS 6160A tablets, VAS 6150X laptops or other
personal computing device! Doing so may lead to system and application malfunctions that can only be
resolved with Windows 7 reinstallation.

2.0 – Preparation
Notes:
• The following procedure must be performed by qualified personnel only!
• Please read these instructions in their entirety before performing these procedures. If you do not
understand these instructions, ask your dealership Systems Administrator or IT Professional
for assistance.
• Discard all printed copies of this document after use. Revised versions may be issued at any
time. Always check ServiceNet for the latest version.

2.1 – Overview
• Allow 45 – 120 minutes for completion (depending on volume of data on the hard drive partition)
• Download alignment tool software from ServiceNet to USB flash drive
• Install software and execute alignment process on eligible VAS 6160. (No application files or data are
deleted during alignment).
• Uninstall alignment tool software from VAS 6160

2.2 – Download Alignment Tool Software
Note:
We recommend a one-time download of the alignment tool software to a USB flash drive.
1. Insert a USB flash drive into available port on a workshop/office desktop or laptop with network
access.
2. Launch Internet Explorer and logon to ServiceNet.
3. Go to: Workshop Equipment > VAS Tester > Software
4. Locate and right-click the VAS6160-HDD-Win7-Performance link.
5. Save the .zip folder to the USB flash drive.
6. Unzip (extract) the contents of the folder (Align.exe and VAS 6160.txt) to the USB flash drive.
7. Safely Remove / Eject the USB flash drive and retain for the next steps.

3.0 – Install and Execute Alignment Tool Software
Prerequisites:
 USB flash drive with downloaded alignment software on hand as per Section 2.2.
 VAS 6160 previously upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 with VWGoA-supplied DVD.
 Device must be available for 45 – 120 minutes.
 Device plugged in to power adapter, booted to Windows desktop, no programs running.
Note:
Please execute the alignment process on ONE DEVICE at a TIME through to completion before
proceeding with additional devices.
1. Insert USB flash drive into available port on VAS 6160.
2. Navigate to the USB flash drive directory.
3. Double-click the Align.exe file (

) to start the installation.

4. Wait while the software is installed.

Service Information
When the installation is complete, the device automatically shuts down and restarts Windows. The
alignment process starts automatically afterwards:

Notes:
• The progress screen displayed during the alignment process may appear to freeze or show no
activity. This is normal. Please be patient!
• No user intervention is required during the alignment process. Do not interrupt the alignment
process once it has started (data corruption and/or loss will result).
When the alignment is completed, the device automatically shuts down and restarts Windows.

4.0 – Uninstall Alignment Software
1. Navigate to the USB flash drive directory.
2. Double-click the Align.exe file to start the uninstallation.

3. When the uninstallation is completed, Safely Remove the USB flash drive and repeat the alignment
process on other VAS 6160 in service as necessary.
