Condition

Some customers may comment that a grinding noise can be heard from the rear axle
when turning.

Cause

This condition may be caused by an out-of-spec axle shaft or axle housing on the Left
Hand (LH) side of the vehicle.
– Rear Parking Brake Anchor Backing Plate (Dust Shield) can be found rubbing into the
brake rotor.

Correction

Diagnose and repair condition following the appropriate steps in the Service Procedure
below.

packaging, marking, labeling, and shipping
dangerous goods. In the event of a conflict between
the procedures set forth in this bulletin and the
laws that apply to your dealership, you must follow
those applicable laws.

Service Procedure
Perform Dust Shield Adjustment
1. Remove the rear calipers from the caliper brackets.
Brake Caliper Replacement in SI.
2. Push in axle shaft all the way by pushing on the
rotor face.
3. Determine if the rotor is contacting the dust shield.
• If the rotor is contacting the dust shield, proceed
to step #4.
• If the rotor is not contacting the dust shield,
proceed to Identifying Out of Spec Axle Shaft or
Housing, in this bulletin.
4. Remove the rear rotor and inspect for damage.
Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement in SI.
⇒ If required, Install new rear rotor only if found
damaged.

Important: If required, carefully grind down the
extruded edge of the dust shield to ensure the dust
shield edge does not contact the brake rotor.
5. With the dust shield exposed, adjust and reposition
the dust shield as deemed necessary to prevent
the inner extruded edge from contacting the brake
rotor.
6. Install the original or new rear rotor. Refer to Rear
Brake Rotor Replacement in SI.
7. Verify that the rotor is not contacting the dust
shield.
8. Lower vehicle and test drive vehicle to ensure that
grinding noise has ceased.
Note: If adjusting the dust shield does not fix the
issue, proceed to Identifying Out of Spec Axle Shaft
or Housing.

Service Procedure
Identifying Out of Spec Axle Shaft or Housing
1. Remove the rear axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle
Shaft Replacement in SI.
2. With the rear axle shaft removed, measure the axle
shaft from the outer edge of the brake flange to the
end of the splines.
• If the LH axle shaft measurement is 822.9
+/-0.75 mm (xx in +/- in), the axle shaft is within
specification. Proceed to step #3.
• If the axle shaft is out of specification, replace
with a new axle shaft. Proceed to step #4.

3. Measure the axle housing from the outer edge of
the tube flange to the center of the of the
spreader hole.
• If the LH axle housing measurement is 577.975
+/ 0.76 mm (xx in +/- in), the axle housing is
within specification. Proceed to step 4.
• If the axle housing is out of specification,
replace the axle housing. Refer to Rear Axle
Housing Replacement in SI. After replacing the
axle housing, proceed to step #4.
4. Install new rear axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft
Replacement in SI.
5. Install original or new rear brake rotor (replace with
a new rotor if significant damage occurred). Refer
to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement in SI
6. Lower the vehicle and test drive to ensure the
grinding has ceased.
