Subject: Invalid License Error after ODIS Service Installation

1.0 – Introduction
ODIS Service licenses and security certificates are matched with VAS diagnostic device hardware keys.
Be advised that certain hardware repairs and operating system revisions will invalidate or change the
hardware key. As a result, if ODIS Service is initially installed or reinstalled with the license file obtained
before the hardware repair or operating system revision, ODIS Service determines a mismatch and an
“Invalid license” error is displayed.
Sections 2.0 and 3.0 cover two device-specific situations that cause an “invalid license” error. Identify
the applicable device and situation that may apply, and follow the instructions accordingly.
Note: The following procedures must be performed by qualified personnel only!

2.0 – VAS 5051B & VAS 5052A Serviced by Siemens - Invalid Hardware Key
VAS 5051B and VAS 5052A that were serviced or refurbished by Siemens may generate an invalid
hardware key. In these cases the hardware key must be corrected and new license and security
certificate requests must be submitted. Proceed as follows:
Prerequisites:
 Person performing this procedure has access permission to eShop and eCRMS.
 Utility CD V03.00.00 on hand.
 VAS 5051B or 5052A with dealership network access plugged in to power adapter and booted to
Windows desktop.
1. Insert Utility CD V03.00.00 in the CD/DVD drive. The CD should autorun.
2. If the CD does not autorun, click My Computer and click util_3_0 (_:) from the CD/DVD drive
directory. (If necessary, click UtilityCD.exe to launch the interface.)
3. Click Certificates, and then click Continue. A brief routine will run to correct the hardware key.
4. Click Ende and remove the Utility CD from the CD/DVD drive.
5. Use the 5051B or 5052A to logon to eShop and request a new license. Refer to Section 4.0 of Service
Information – ODIS Service document title: ODIS Service Installation Phase 1 – Preparation &
License Request Instructions (Shop).
Note:
Be sure to record the new hardware key in an assigned Device ID folder on a USB flash drive! The
new hardware key must be submitted during the security certificate request and installation process.
When the new license file is delivered via email, configure the new license as per the instructions
in Section 4.0 – Page 2.

Service Information
3.0 – VAS 6150/X & VAS 6160/-VPC - Changed Hardware Key
Certain hardware repairs and operating system revisions on VAS 6150/X & VAS 6160/-VPC may result in
a changed hardware key.
Hardware repairs include hard drive, motherboard etc. replacements. Operating system revisions
include operating system recovery, system language or other OS settings changes. In these cases new
license and security certificate requests must be submitted. Proceed as follows:
Prerequisites:
 Person performing this procedure has access permission to eShop and eCRMS.
 VAS 6150/X or 6160/-VPC with dealership network access plugged in to power adapter and booted
to Windows desktop.
1. Use the 6150/X or 6160/-VPC to logon to eShop and request a new license. Refer to Section 4.0 in
Service Information – ODIS Service document title: ODIS Service Installation Phase 1 –
Preparation & License Request Instructions (Shop).
Note:
Be sure to record the new hardware key in an assigned Device ID folder on a USB flash drive! The
new hardware key must be submitted during the security certificate request and installation process.
When the new license file is delivered via email, configure the new license as per the instructions
below:

4.0 – Configure New License
1. Copy the license file from the email to a prepared folder on a USB flash drive (preferably the same
flash drive originally used during the device’s initial request and installation process).
2. Insert the USB flash drive into an open port on the affected diagnostic device.
3. From the Windows desktop, go to Start > Programs (All Programs) > Offboard Diagnostic System
Service > Configure License.
4. Click Browse:

5. Navigate to the USB flash drive directory and open the folder containing the new license file.

6. Select (highlight) the license file, and then click Open to copy it to the configuration window:

7. Ensure the new license file appears in the configuration window, and then click OK:

The new license file associated with the corrected or new hardware key is installed.

5.0 – Request New Security Certificate
1. Logon to vwhub and the eCRMS application
2. Submit a new security certificate request using the new hardware key saved on the USB flash drive.

3. Install the security certificate when available (ref. the instructions in the Phase 3 document).
4. Place the device back in service.
