Issue
Cascadia vehicles (not NEW Cascadia) experience shortages and future scarcity for for steering
wheel air bag replacements resulting from the supplier transition from Takata to Joysen.
Solution
Joysen now supplies Cascadia steering wheel airbags for many applications. The Joysen airbags
are the same fit as the Takata versions, but the connector on the airbag squib to the clockspring is
different. The clockspring must be replaced along with the updated Joysen airbag, and in some
circumstances the crash sensor may need to be updated to match. Due to the additional parts
necessary for steering wheel airbag replacement combined with potential parts scarcity, all proper
troubleshooting steps must be taken proactively to avoid costly errors.
See the attached pdf for a visual flowchart. Note in the document that the reader must first
determine the applicable 725 module datacode that the vehicle was built with. This may require a
call to either the dealership's respective DSM or the DTNA Customer Assistance Center. If the
reader finds that the flowchart dead ends with either "Contact Engineering" or " No replacement
possible", the final step is to contact the DTNA Customer Assistance Center and request escalation
via a Sales Force case.
Additional note- the switches in the new Joysen air bag covers do not have LED backlighting to
match the original function. If the customer wants to retain the LED backlighting, and the original
switches are in good order, the Takata switch pod assembly can be swapped into the replacement
Joysen part.
