SUBJECT VEHICLES: Certain 2021 model year NJ8J and NV8J
Hino Conventional vehicles produced at the Mineral Wells, West
Virginia assembly plant.
Note: Refer to the appropriate Vehicle Identification Number
in the warranty system to determine vehicle eligibility.
OVERVIEW:
Hino quality is randomly collecting front air brake modulator
valves to analyze performance and measure any potential
corrosion. The following procedure provides instruction for
replacing the modulator and properly identifying each part for
investigation.

Read and understand all instructions and procedures before
you begin the work.
Read and follow all NOTICES and WARNINGS set forth in this
publication. These alerts help to avoid damage to
components, serious personal injury, or both.
Park the vehicle on a flat, level and solid surface.
Apply the parking brake firmly and confirm parking brake
activation.
Confirm the engine is stopped, the starter switch is in the off
(LOCK) position, and the key is removed.
Wear safety glasses to prevent eye injuries.
Place wheel chocks in front of and behind all the wheels to
prevent the vehicle from moving.

Air Brake ABS Modulator

VEHICLE PREPARATION:
1. Park the vehicle on a level and solid surface. Confirm the
engine is stopped, the starter switch is in the off (LOCK) position,
and the key is removed.

2. Apply the parking brake. Chock all of the wheels.

Repair Procedure:
1. Release the hood latches on the left and right side of the

vehicle.

2. Fully raise the hood.

3. Locate the left front brake ABS modulator on the frame rail
inside of the left front wheel. Disconnect the electrical connector
from the left front brake ABS modulator by sliding the yellow
locking mechanism up and away from the connector.

4. Release the air line from the inlet of the left front brake ABS
modulator by depressing the retaining ring around the line and
pulling the line from the fitting.

5. Remove the brake hose from the outlet of the left front brake
ABS modulator. Make certain that the sealing washer remains in
the brake hose fitting.

6. Remove the two bolts and nuts securing the left front brake
ABS modulator to the chassis and remove the ABS modulator.
Retain the bolts and nuts for reassembly.

7. Label the old left front ABS modulator with an “L” before
continuing.

8. Remove the fittings from the old left front brake ABS modulator
and clean old sealer from the threads.

9. Apply Loctite 575 thread sealer to the threads of the fittings
removed in step 8 and install in the new ABS modulator. The brass
fitting installs in port “1” and the elbow fitting installs in port “2”.
Tighten the fittings to the specified torque. Advance the elbow
fitting as needed to achieve the orientation shown.
Specified Torque: 33 lb-ft (44Nm)

10. Install the new left front brake ABS modulator using the bolts
and nuts removed in step 6. Tighten the fasteners to the specified
torque.
Specified Torque: 16 lb-ft (22Nm)

11. Verify the sealing washer is installed in the brake hose fitting
then connect the brake hose to the outlet of the left front brake
ABS modulator and tighten to the specified torque.
Specified Torque: 31 lb-ft (42Nm)

12. Connect the air line to the left front brake ABS modulator inlet
fitting by firmly pushing the line into the fitting until it stops.

13. Connect the electrical connector to the LH ABS modulator,
ensure the yellow connector slide lock is fully depressed.

14. Repeat steps 3 through 13 on the right front brake ABS
modulator.
NOTE: Be certain to label the old right front brake ABS
modulator with an “R” to indicate the position it was removed
from.

15. Place the removed ABS modulators in the replacement part
boxes, ensure the boxes are properly labeled with vehicle
information. These will be collected through the warranty part
return process.

FINAL INSPECTION:
1. To complete this procedure review and confirm the following:

Both front axle brake ABS modulator valves have been
replaced
The removed brake ABS modulator valves have been labeled
“Left” and “Right” for warranty part return
No air leaks are present on the vehicle

Reimbursable in accordance within the terms and policies of the
Hino limited warranties.
