Subject: Emission Recall D23R3 DETROIT™ DD8® ACM Software
Reprogramming
Models Affected: DD8 (936.913 & 936.917)

General Information
Daimler Truck North America LLC, on behalf of its DETROITTM Powertrain Division, is initiating Emission Recall
Campaign D23R3 to modify the vehicles mentioned above.
DETROITTM Model Year 2018 DD8® engines will require reprogramming to a minimum of the ACM software version
and fuel map version listed below:



ACM Software Version 13.54.2.0 with fuel maps ending in ZGS 004

Compatible Software:
 MCM Software Version 12.2.2.2 w/ fuel maps ending in ZGS 002
 CPC Software Version R42_00_000A
DETROITTM Model Year 2018 DD8® engines, built from July 2017 through August 2018 require the latest ACM fuel
maps to correct fuel map calibrations. ACM 13.54.2.0, with the above fuel maps ending in ZGS 004, are the certified
fuel maps for these Model Year 2018 DD8® engines. The fuel maps became available in June 2022. The CPC and
MCM may require reprogramming for compatibility.
There are approximately 709 engines affected by this Emission Recall Campaign.
Any engines, already reprogrammed, are excluded from this Emission Recall Campaign. Note that current software
levels may be higher than the minimum levels shown above.

Additional Repairs
Dealers must complete all outstanding Recall and Field Service campaigns prior to the sale or delivery of a vehicle.
A Dealer will be liable for any progressive damage that results from its failure to complete campaigns before sale or
delivery of a vehicle. Owners may be liable for any progressive damage that results from failure to complete
campaigns within a reasonable time after receiving notification. Please contact Warranty Campaigns for
consideration of additional charges prior to performing the repair.

Reprogramming
Your vehicle may be equipped with software that violates (California or California and Federal) standards and
regulations.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has determined that your engine/equipment may be emitting
pollutants in excess of the federal emission standards (and/or California standards) as defined in Title 40 of the
Code of Federal Regulations. These emission standards protect the public health and welfare from air pollution.
To ensure your full protection, by federal law, under the emission warranty on your engine/equipment, and your
right to participate in future recalls, we recommend you have your engine/equipment serviced as soon as
possible. Failure to do so can be considered improper maintenance.
Your vehicle may be releasing air pollutants, which exceed California and Federal standards. The condition, if not
repaired, may cause the vehicle or engine to fail a vehicle inspection or Smog Check test when such tests are
required under state law. The condition does not cause any adverse effect on the performance, fuel economy, or
durability of the vehicle or engine.
Daimler Truck North America LLC (DTNA), on behalf of its DETROIT TM Powertrain division, is initiating emission
recall D23R3 to modify model year 2018 DD8® engines manufactured between July 2017 and August 2018.
Note that trucks already reprogrammed are excluded from this recall. Records indicate that your vehicle has an
affected engine, which requires reprogramming software and fuel maps. The procedure will be completed at no
cost to you, when performed by a DTNA authorized repair facility. The scheduled time for the software update is
approximately 0.6 hours.
Please contact a DTNA authorized repair facility and arrange to have the emission recall campaign performed. To
locate an authorized facility, search online at https://demanddetroit.com/find-a-dealer
If you reside in the State of California, a Proof of Correction form will be provided to you by the service facility
upon completion of the repair. Please retain it as it may be requested by the DMV in order to register your
vehicle.
Please understand that the California DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) will reject vehicle registration
renewals if this emission related recall has not been completed.
In order to ensure your full protection under the emission warranty provisions, it is recommended that you have
your engine serviced as soon as possible. Failure to do so could be determined as a lack of proper maintenance
of your engine.
You may be liable for any progressive damage that results from failure to complete campaigns within a
reasonable time after receiving notification.
If you do not own the vehicle that corresponds to the identification number(s), which appears on the Recall
Notification card, please return the notification to the Warranty Department, Attention Campaign Coordinator, with
any information you can furnish that will assist us in locating the present owner.

facility concerning this matter.
For those customers who had this issue and paid for the service prior to this recall, they can send in their receipts
to Detroit Diesel Corporation for reimbursement consideration.

This notice was sent to you in accordance with the requirements of Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA),
1999.
Your vehicle may be releasing air pollutants, which exceed California and Federal standards. The condition, if not
repaired, may cause the vehicle or engine to fail a vehicle inspection or Smog Check test when such tests are
required under state law. The condition does not cause any adverse effect on the performance, fuel economy, or
durability of the vehicle or engine.
Certain DETROITTM DD8® engines registered in Canada will require reprogramming to a minimum software and fuel
map version. Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), 1999, California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the
Environment Protection Agency (EPA) regulations require that software and fuel maps meet certain criteria.
Reprogramming the ACM corrects the fuel maps to a certified version.
Daimler Truck North America LLC (DTNA), on behalf of its DETROIT TM Powertrain division, is initiating emission
recall D23R3 to modify model year 2018 DD8® engines manufactured between July 2017 and August 2018.
Note that trucks already reprogrammed are excluded from this recall. Records indicate that your vehicle has an
affected engine, which requires reprogramming software and fuel maps. The procedure will be completed at no
cost to you when performed by an Authorized Detroit Diesel Repair Facility and will be at the expense of Daimler

Work Instructions
Subject: Emission Recall D23R3 Detroit™ DD8® MCM Software Reprogramming
Models Affected: DD8 Engines (936.913 & 936.917)

Corrective Procedure
1. Apply parking brake, chock wheels, and perform any other applicable safety steps.
Note: You MUST use DiagnosticLink® Professional 8.17 with Service Pack 1 (or higher) when reprogramming.

2. Begin the process by connecting DiagnosticLink ® to the vehicle. Make sure that the modules, ACM, CPC and
MCM, are connected.
NOTICE:
BEFORE beginning reprogramming, make sure the VIN is correct in the modules, ACM, CPC, and
MCM. If the VIN is not correct in these modules, you will get an error message when attempting to
reprogram.

3. Make sure the VIN is correct in all modules, ACM, CPC, and MCM, by looking at the ‘Identification’ screen in
DiagnosticLink®. If any VIN is incorrect, you can correct the VIN under the ‘Actions’ drop-down menu in
DiagnosticLink® by selecting the ‘Check VIN Synchronization’ item. Select ‘Start’ from this panel and follow the
prompts. Follow all prompts to cycle the key until the routine completes. When synchronization is complete, turn
ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF) and continue the download process.

4. On the ‘Identification’ screen, check the current ACM software. Listed below is the MINIMUM level required.
See Figure 1 for an example of the ‘Identification’ screen.

5. Is the fuel map ZGS level for the ACM less than the levels listed in the Minimum Software Levels table?
For example, in Figure 1, ACM software 13.54.2.0 with fuel map ZGS 003 is less than the required fuel
map ending in ZGS 004.
a) Yes, the fuel map ZGS level is less than the required software and ZGS shown in Minimum Software Levels.
Go to step 6.
b) No, the level is higher than, or equal to, the required software level and ZGS. Programming is not
necessary. Go to step 13.

6. Select ‘Program Device’ option along the left side of the DiagnosticLink ® screen.
7. Select the ‘Add’ button in the lower left corner of the DiagnosticLink® screen and enter the engine serial number.
Then click the ‘Connect to Server’ button in the bottom left corner of the DiagnosticLink screen to continue the
download. Select ‘Connected unit’, then select ‘Next’. See Figures 2, 3, and 4.

8. Program the ACM based on the above inspection results and engine serial number listing included with this
Emission Recall Campaign. Note: CPC and MCM may require reprogramming for compatibility.

9. When programming is complete, click the “Finish” button and perform the following to allow the modules to
synchronize with each other:
 Disconnect the USB Link at the 9-pin vehicle diagnostic port.
 Turn the vehicle ignition OFF and wait one minute.
 Turn the vehicle ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF) and wait one minute.
 Turn the vehicle ignition OFF and wait one minute.
 Turn the vehicle ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF) and wait one minute.
 Reconnect the USB Link, reconnect DiagnosticLink to the MCM, ACM, and CPC to confirm the proper
software.

10. Update the server by clicking the ‘Connect to Server’ button in the bottom left corner of the DiagnosticLink
screen.
NOTICE:
CHECK with the customer if Auto Elevate can be enabled. Auto Elevate can prevent Aftertreatment
System (ATS) issues.

11. Ask the customer if they would like Auto Elevate activated. REFERENCE Detroit Technical Service letter
16TS-18 for full details on Auto Elevate.

12. Install base label WAR259 (if not already present) and a blank, red completion sticker WAR260. See
Completion Stickers section.

13. Complete Vehicle Emission-Proof of Correction and provide to the customer.
14. Repairs are complete.

Upon completion of Emission Recall D23R3, clean a spot on the base label (Form WAR259), write the
Emission Recall Number (D23R3) on a blank, red completion sticker (Form WAR260), and attach it to the
base label.


