SITUATION
Check control message (CCM) 183 “Windscreen wiper malfunction" is displayed.

CAUSE
To protect the wiper motor from overheating, “thermal wiper motor protection mode” is activated.
The wiping frequency is reduced and CCM 183 “Windscreen wiper malfunction” is displayed to the
customer.

PROCEDURE
Should the above occur, verify with the customer the frequency of the message and what the environmental
conditions were. Based on this information, checking the functionality and operation of the wipers may be
necessary. Adjust the steering column switch to position two, spray water on the windshield for
approximately 20 minutes to see if the issue re-occurs.
If the wiper motor overheats, wiping frequency will be reduced. Simultaneously, CCM 183 “Windscreen
wiper malfunction” will be displayed. The wiper system is designed with thermal wiper motor protection
mode to safeguard components and prevent damage.
The wiping system is OK and working by design. Inform the customer about thermal protection for the wiper
system and the expected behavior.
Thermal wiper motor protection model:
Stage 2 => Level 1 at 161 °F with CCM 183
Stage 1 => intermittent at 165 °F with CCM 183
Intermittent => drive is stopped at 169 °F.

Additional Notes:
Running the wiper system for a relatively long period in dry wipe operation is not allowed.
Effect: Wiper arm stops in the middle of the windscreen. Interval stops at 169 °F.
From a defined temperature threshold, the wiper frequency is initially limited to 41 wipe cycles per minute.
As the temperature continues to increase, the system switches from continuous wipe to intermittent
operation with a wiper frequency of 41 wipe cycles separated by a pause of 2 seconds.
If the temperature continues to rise, the wiper motor is shut down
If a defined temperature threshold is exceeded very rapidly, the control electronics switch immediately to
intermittent operation with a wiper frequency of 41 wipe cycles separated by a pause of 4 seconds
