SITUATION
Under certain driving situations, air can be pulled through the automatic transmission oil supply
Do not deliver to a customer, a New, Certified Pre-Owned or Used vehicle subject to a Delivery Stop,
until the vehicle is repaired. Do not use or sell replacement equipment/parts subject to a Delivery
Stop.
CAUSE
During manufacturing, the automatic transmission may have been built without an oil filter
CORRECTION
Check for installation of a filter.
PROCEDURE
Checking the transmission will require a magnetic ring detection tool. Magnetic Card readers were available
to order with SI B04 31 11 (some workshops may still have them). If a card reader is needed, it can be
ordered through the BMW Equipment Program website:

Raise the vehicle and access the transmission oil pan for inspection.
The transmission filter is located inside the
pan closest to illustration (1).
Hold the magnetic card reader (1) against the
pan and slowly move it left to right.

If the transmission filter is installed it will leave fuzzy
ribs on the reader (1).
No further repair is required.
There will be no visible change to the card
reader if there is no filter (2).
Moving the card reader over a magnet will
clear any images on the card for future tests.
No Filter is Present
Submit a TSARA TC Transmission Case with subject “XM Transmission Filter” if there is no filter
present for further assistance. Provide a photo of the card reader image against the transmission
pan in the case.

Reimbursement for this Action will be via normal claim entry utilizing the applicable work package
information below.

technician notes and the claim comments (For example: B24 01 23 WP 1, No Repair is Necessary), unless
otherwise required by State law.

As noted in the Procedure section, if the transmission has no filter per the inspection with the magnetic card,
submit a TSARA TC case for further assistance.
Alternative Mobility Solution (AMS) for Vehicle Owners (RO and Claim Comments Required)
This Recall repair qualifies for Alternative Mobility Solution (AMS) expense reimbursement, claim this item
under the Defect Code noted above as follows:
Sublet Code 2 - Itemize the AMS sublet amount on the repair order and in the claim comment section.
