STARTERS

SUBJECT VEHICLES: 2022MY-2023MY L-Series Conventional
trucks equipped with a B6.7 Cummins engine
OVERVIEW:
BorgWarner has discontinued the 35MT starter (Hino P/N
28100EW080) that Hino used in certain 2022 model year and
part of 2023 model year conventional trucks. Hino has
superseded the 35MT starter (Hino P/N 28100EW080) to the
31MT starter (Hino P/N 28100EW090). If the BorgWarner 35MT
starter requires replacement on an applicable 2022 or 2023
model year vehicle, the vehicle’s alternator sub wire harness and
chassis sub harness may also require replacement. An inspection
of each of the harness part number tags is required to determine
if harness replacement is necessary. This harness replacement
will allow for proper installation of the BorgWarner 31MT starter.
The new harnesses will also allow for use of either the 35MT or
31MT starter on the vehicle.

Read and understand all instructions before you begin the work.
Read and follow all WARNINGS and NOTICES set forth in this
publication, on product warnings, the Owner’s Manual, Workshop
Manual, the Cummins B6.7 Owner’s Manual and Service Manual, and
any instructions provided with the BorgWarner 31MT starter. These
alerts help to avoid damage to components, serious personal injury, or
both.
Park the vehicle on a flat, level and solid surface.
Place the gear shift lever in "Neutral" or "Park".
Apply the parking brake firmly and confirm parking brake activation.
Turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition switch.
Always wear safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes.
Place wheel chocks in front of and behind all the wheels
to prevent the vehicle from moving.

PARTS:

VEHICLE PREPARATION:
1. Park the vehicle on a flat, level and solid surface. Confirm the
engine is stopped, the ignition switch is in the off (LOCK) position,
and the key is removed.

2. Apply the parking brake.

3. Chock all of the wheels.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE:
NOTICE: This procedure provides direction only for wiring
harness removal and replacement. For starter removal and
replacement information, please refer to the Cummins B6.7
service manual. This procedure assumes the discontinued
BorgWarner 35MT (Hino P/N 28100EW080) starter motor has
already been removed in accordance with the instructions,
warnings and notices provided by the applicable Cummins
B6.7 manuals.
1. Verify and record the amperage rating of the alternator on the
vehicle.

2. On the right-hand side of the engine compartment, locate the
large diameter battery positive cable connecting the B+ terminal
of the alternator to the B+ terminal of the starter. Record the part
number on the label. This is the “Alternator Sub Wire Harness”.

3. Also on the right-hand side of the engine compartment, locate
the small wire harness that attaches to the starter switch terminal
of the starter motor. Follow this wire up towards the alternator to
locate the part label. Record the part number on the label. This is
the “Chassis Sub Harness”.

4. Compare the harness part numbers to the materials table at
the beginning of this document. If the harness part numbers are
the new version, no action is necessary. If the harnesses are the
old version, they must be replaced with the new version before a
31MT starter is installed. Continue to “Repair Procedure”.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
WARNING: Do not attempt to remove starter or alternator
connections with the battery connected. Serious personal
injury, death, or property damage could occur if the battery
is connected during this procedure. The battery shutoff switch
will NOT disable the main battery cables to the starter and
alternator.
1. Disconnect all negative battery cables.

2. Remove the nut and washers securing the old alternator sub wire
to the alternator B+ terminal. Retain these fasteners and the rubber
terminal boot for reassembly.

3. Release the two harness clips and cut any zip ties securing the
alternator sub wire harness to the vehicle. Remove and discard the
old alternator sub wire harness.

4. Disconnect the old chassis sub harness from the connection to
the main chassis harness near the right side of the radiator.

5. Disconnect the connection at the A/C compressor clutch.

6. Disconnect the connection at the alternator.

7. Release the three harness clips securing the old chassis sub
harness to the vehicle. Remove and discard the old chassis sub
harness.

8. Verify the new chassis sub harness has the proper part
number using the table at the beginning of this procedure.
Connect the new chassis sub harness to the main chassis
harness connection.

9. Attach the three clipping points on the new chassis sub
harness to the mounting brackets.

10. Connect the new chassis sub harness to the alternator
connection.

11. Connect the new chassis sub harness to the A/C compressor
clutch connection.

12. Route the remaining branch of the new chassis sub harness
towards the starter motor.
NOTICE: Starter shown installed in picture below for location
reference.

13. Verify proper part number and install the new alternator sub wire

harness using the fasteners and rubber terminal boot removed in
step 2. Attach the two attachment clips into place before tightening
the nut to the specified torque.

Specified Torque: 99 lb-in (8 lb-ft / 11Nm) 130A/160A/200A Alternator

62 lb-in (5 lb-ft / 7Nm) 135A Alternator

14. Install a zip tie at each of the two locations highlighted by
yellow tape on the harnesses that were replaced. Be sure to
include any harnesses that were originally included in these zip
ties.
NOTICE: Starter shown installed in the left picture below for
location reference.

15. Complete any necessary starter motor replacement and
electrical connections before continuing to step 16.
16. Connect the negative battery cables. Tighten the battery

terminal nuts to the specified torque.

Specified Torque: 97 lb-in (8 lb-ft / 11Nm)

FINAL INSPECTION:
1. To complete this technical service bulletin, review the bulletin
and confirm the following:

The alternator sub wire harness has been replaced with the
correct part number.
The chassis sub harness has been replaced with the correct
part number.
All fasteners have been tightened to their specified torque.
The wiring harnesses are properly routed, secured and not
interfering with other vehicle components.
