This bulletin provides information to inspect and, if necessary, replace the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit
(HECU) on certain K5 (DL3a) and Telluride (ON) and Sorento (MQ4a) vehicles produced on the dates shown
in Table below. The HECU in the subject vehicles may have been produced with a condition that can result in
an internal brake fluid leak. If an internal brake fluid leak occurs, the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) light, AntiLock Brake System (ABS) light, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) light, Auto-Hold light and/or Forward
Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) light may illuminate, or a Smart Cruise Control (SCC) warning message may
appear on the instrument cluster. If this occurs, EPB, ESC and Auto-Hold functions may be disabled. Follow
the procedure outlined in the publication to inspect and, if necessary, replace the HECU. Before conducting
the procedure, verity that the vehicle is included in the VIN List affected.

IMPORTANT
This test procedure must be performed with the ignition ‘OFF’. (DO NOT ‘START’ the engine at any
time during the test procedure
•
Use the SST Multimeter to measure the parasitic current draw only (Do not use for any other
purposes). Ensure the SST has a good 9V battery installed.
•
Parasitic draw must be measured for at least 15 seconds, in order to record a constant value.
Setting the SST Multimeter:
1.
Connect two (2) lead wires (red and black) to the SST.
Black Ground (-) lead wire; connect to COM
Positive (+) lead wire; connect to VΩmA.

Inspection Procedure:
1a.
Open the hood and disconnect the negative (-)
battery terminal.
1b.
Remove the engine room junction block/fuse
cover.
IMPORTANT
Refer to the Campaign Type and
Specifications table on page 5.
2.
Locate the Multi Fuse and remove the 10mm
Multi Fuse retaining nut and remove the Multi
Fuse.

Reconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
4.
Using the two (2) SST Multimeter jumper leads,
carefully contact the ‘black’ lead to the
applicable ‘ESC1 or ABS1’ fuse terminal (per the
applicable model and reference from table on
page 5) and the ‘red’ lead to the fuse box
‘Positive’ (E) post.
ABS for K5 (DL3a)
Measure the Multimeter value/reading for at
least 15 seconds.
Note: The current draw value must stay
constant.
ABS for Sorento (MQ4a)
CAUTION
DO NOT damage the terminals.
Continue to Step 5 on page 5.
ESC for Telluride (ON)

5a.
If current draw value is BELOW (the Max. Dark
Current Value Allowed) listed on the table
below, reinstall the removed parts in the
reverse order of removal. No further action
required.
5b.
If current draw value is OVER (the Max. Dark
Current Value Allowed) listed on the table
below, open a Techline case and attach a
picture of the meter reading for review prior to
part order. All part orders are on manual
allocation.
5c.
Replace the Hydraulic Electronic Control unit
(HECU*) by referring to the “Brake System →
ESC (Electronic Stability Control) System → ESC
Control Module → Repair procedures” chapter
in the applicable Shop Manual on KGIS.
*Refer to EPC OE variant for the applicable
HECU Assy required and match to replacement
QQK P/N on page 6.
NOTICE
All parts replaced are subject to return to the Warranty Parts Return Center (WPRC) for
verification of the reported parasitic draw.
