• Customer may report that the gearbox warning message is on.
• DTC P0706 (driving mode sensor, implausible signal) is stored in the transmission control module (TCM), J217
(address 02).

Technical Background
There is a reaction between the TCM and the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) in vehicles within a specific VIN
range.

Service
The TCM must be replaced. Before the TCM is replaced, the ATF must be completely flushed, and the ATF test
run executed twice, as described in the instructions that follow:

There is a risk of damaging the transmission. Perform all the work exactly as described.

1. Drain the ATF according to the instructions in Elsa >> Repair Manual >> Transmission >> Continuously

2. Fill the transmission with new ATF according to the instructions in Elsa >> Repair Manual >> Transmission >>
Continuously Variable Transmission Internal Components >> 37 Controls, Housing >> General Information >>
ATF, Filling for ATF Flush.
3. Perform a test run for ATF flushing according to the instructions in Elsa >> Repair Manual >> Transmission >>
Continuously Variable Transmission Internal Components >> 37 Controls, Housing >> Description and
Operation >> ATF Flush, Performing a Test Run.
4. Drain the ATF, again, according to the instructions in Elsa >> Repair Manual >> Transmission >> Continuously

for ATF Flush.
5. Fill the transmission with new ATF, again, according to the instructions in Elsa >> Repair Manual >>

6. Perform a test run for ATF flushing, again, according to the instructions in Elsa >> Repair Manual >>

8. Replace the TCM (J217) according to the instructions in Elsa >> Repair Manual >> Transmission >>

Installation >> Transmission Control Module J217.
9. Fill the transmission with new ATF according to the instructions in Elsa >> Repair Manual >> Transmission >>
Continuously Variable Transmission >> 37 Controls, Housing >> General Information >> ATF, Draining or
Filling after Repair.
10. Check and correct ATF level according to the instructions in Elsa >> Repair Manual >> Transmission >>
Continuously Variable Transmission >> 37 Controls, Housing >> General Information >> ATF, Checking Level
and Correcting.
Note: The drained ATF must not be reused.
11. Test drive to confirm proper operation after repair
