SUBJECT:
Squeak Noise From Spare Tire Winch
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves inspecting the tire winch for proper operation and applying lube.

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles built on or before October 21, 2014 (MDH
1021XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience one or both of the following conditions:
•

Squeak noise in the rear of the vehicle.
Unable to lower or raise the spare tire.

DIAGNOSIS:
If the customer describes the symptom/condition listed above, perform the Repair
Procedure.

Nye® Synthetic Lubricant

NOTE: Each tube of Nye® synthetic lubricant will service approximately 25 vehicles.
SPECIAL TOOLS/EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
9615A Or Equivalent

Pitman Shaft Puller

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Start to lower the spare tire, only loosen the winch 3 to 4 turns.
NOTE: The spare tire winch is located behind the right rear tire, under the vehicle.

2. Did the spare tire lower?
a. Yes >>> Proceed to Step #4.
b. No >>> Proceed to Step #3.
3. Reach under the vehicle, grab the tire and move it around to free it from the
undercarriage.
4. Lower the tire all the way and remove it from the winch.
5. Raise the vehicle on the hoist and visually inspect the anti-chip coating. Check for
sags or excessive coating that caused the tire to bind in the opening, see (Fig. 1).

6. Carefully trim off any excessive coating making sure not to remove to much of the
coating.
7. Lubricate the shaft on the winch spring seat, to help reduce rattle and or squeaks in
the rear of the vehicles.
8. Use a pitman shaft puller to help compress the spring. Position the puller as seen in
(Fig. 2).

9. Hand tighten the puller to gain access to the lower part of the bushing, see (Fig. 3).

10. Pull up on the bushing to expose the lower part of the bushing.
11. Spread lube around the lower part of the bushing, see (Fig. 4).

12. Loosen and remove pitman shaft puller.
13. If needed, reposition the cables closer to the body by pushing the cables up until they
are about 2 inches from the floor.
14. Lower the vehicle and put the spare tire back on the winch.
15. Cable must be located between the floor pan and tire, see (Fig. 5).

16. Raise the spare tire with the tire winch. When the tire has been lifted completely a
yellow mark will appear in the winch window, see (Fig. 6).

CAUTION: If the yellow mark is not visible, the winch may not properly secure the
spare tire.
17. Visually inspect the spare tire winch cables, they should be tight to the undercarriage.
