Introduction
About this Manual
This manual contains specific information pertaining to the installation of Type 4 compressed natural gas (CNG) cylinders
designed and manufactured by Hexagon® Agility®.* It should not be applied to cylinders made by other manufacturers.
It is the responsibility of the vehicle OEM or third party installer to provide this manual to the appropriate personnel and to
ensure its accessibility. Appropriate personnel includes, but is not limited to, those who are responsible for the storage,
handling and installation of the cylinders.
A thorough understanding of the information provided in this manual is required for the safe installation of the product. If
further information is needed or questions arise, contact Hexagon Agility.

Installation Procedures
Storage and Handling

Hexagon Agility cylinders are shipped from the factory with either open ports or open valves to prevent a vacuum
from forming. Non-sealing plastic caps are installed to prevent contamination.
Hexagon Agility recommends cylinders be stored in the original packaging and indoors away from UV light,
moisture, corrosive chemicals, heat sources, and moving equipment. The cylinders may be stored outside if
protected against UV light, water ingress into cylinder or installed hardware, and other environmental conditions.
Hexagon Agility recommends the following handling guidelines:





Use lifting equipment that will not damage the cylinder.
Lift cylinders by the composite body and never by the fittings, valves, or thermal pressure relief devices
(T-PRDs).
Transfer cylinders directly from the original packaging into the fuel system.
Protect cylinders from damage that may occur while assembling the fuel system.

Valve, T-PRD, and Fitting Installation

Valves, T-PRDs, and fittings may have different installation requirements. Refer to the associated Design
Parameters (DP) document to determine the correct torque specification and the appropriate O-ring lubrication
to use. Some hardware may require a special installation tool from the manufacturer. These are also listed in the
DP document.
Required Tools
 torque wrench (torque rating based on DP requirements)
 crowfoot wrench or socket (of proper size); or special installation tool for the valve, T-PRD, or fitting
 O-ring lubricant
 gloves (latex or nitrile)
Installation
1. Always wear new pair of gloves to prevent contamination.

2. Inspect component O-ring and threads for damage. If damage is found, contact the appropriate supplier
for replacement.
3. Place a single drop of O-ring lubricant on O-ring.
4. Work lubricant onto the entire surface of O-ring.
5. Install lubricated O-ring on valve, T-PRD, or fitting ensuring the O-ring is not damaged and does not
twist, roll, or bind.
6. Remove plastic cap that comes pre-installed in the cylinder port.
7. Hand-tighten valve, T-PRD, or fitting into cylinder port.
8. Verify cylinder is properly oriented and secured before torquing valve, T-PRD, or fitting to specified
value (refer to DP) with appropriate tool.

Mount Hardware Installation

Hexagon Agility cylinders may be mounted by straps or end blocks. End mounting requires the cylinder to have
end mount features and may come in either a one-piece or two-piece block design. Refer to the associated DP
document for details on mounting hardware locations and spacings.
Fasteners used to attach the mount hardware are not provided in the Hexagon Agility supplied assemblies. It is
the responsibility of the fuel system designer to determine the proper fasteners and torque requirements.
Installation directions are referenced in the DP.

Cylinder Installation

Hexagon Agility cylinders are intended to be installed on fuel systems according to FMVSS 303, NFPA 52,
CMVSS 301.2, CSA B109, ECE R110, or equivalent code.
Transferring cylinder(s) from system to system is not recommended because of the inherit risk of damage while
removing cylinder(s) from a system.
If a cylinder is being transferred, or the cylinder installation has been significantly altered, then a Periodic Full
Visual Inspection must be performed.

Shielding

System design should include shielding to protect cylinders from damage as required by applicable codes (NFPA
52, ECE R110, etc.). Potential sources of damage include, but are not limited to, UV light, road debris, collision,
extreme heat, and impact.
Clearance shall be maintained between the shields and cylinders under the full range of vehicle motion,
temperature effects, and cylinder expansion.
Shields shall not interfere with the ability of the T-PRD to trigger when the cylinder is exposed to fire.

Fire Protection

Cylinder codes require that each cylinder be protected by one or more T-PRDs. The type, number, and location
of each T-PRD is defined in the Hexagon Agility Statement of Service document.
Additional fire protection requirements are outlined in Hexagon Agility document ES.0031.

Plumbing

Strain relief in the plumbing is necessary to allow for cylinder expansion and fuel system flex during vehicle
motion.
Vent plumbing shall not restrict the flow of the T-PRDs. If multiple cylinders share a vent line, sizing of tube and
fittings shall provide the same flow rate for each cylinder as if it were vented directly.
