If normal SI diagnostics does not lead to a resolution and an intake vacuum leak or an
exhaust leak is suspected, the GE-52250 Variable Pressure Leak Detector (preferred
method), the J-41416 ultrasonic leak tester, or possibly using soapy water and low
pressure air into the tailpipe, may be useful to find the leak.
Note: All of these tests are much more effective if the throttle body is covered/sealed.
For an intake leak, the smoke can be introduced into the brake booster hose or the oil
dipstick tube. Soapy water can be sprayed near the gasket and seams and all vacuum
nipples.
For an exhaust leak, the hose into the tailpipe with smoke or air sealed with shop towels
proves to be effective. Then soapy water would be sprayed around seal, seams and
bosses. Ultrasonic leak detector may also find leaks in this way.
These methods are very good for finding small leaks around the O2 sensor embossments
and slight cracks in an intake plenum or gasket.
This process was also recommended in the 10207.07D - July 2007 Emerging Issues
training seminar (U.S.).

Special Tools
The technician should start by following SI diagnostics.
If no cause for the concern is found or during diagnosis,
a leak check is required. The preferred and most
effective method to detect the leak is by use of the
GE-52250 Variable Pressure Leak Detector. GE-52250
is not currently an essential tool in the U.S. but it is
available to dealers in the U.S. through the GM Tool
Loaner Program. Service Bulletin 16-NA-158 outlines
the U.S. dealer special tool loan program. For more
information on use of the tool, refer to Component/
System Leak Test (Document ID #5433806) in SI. The
GE-52250 Variable Pressure Leak Detection tool was
introduced to the U.S. dealer technicians during the
December 2019 Service Know How Emerging Issues
broadcast (10219.12V) and during the March 2020 TAC
Talk program for dealers in Canada (52020.03-0D).
