Corporation has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in
specific motorhomes built on Freightliner
and Spartan Chassis.
ISSUE
On certain Newmar
Class A motorhomes built on Freightliner
and Spartan chassis, the upper
nut/bolt connecting the steering column may not being torqued correctly, which could result in
the nut coming loose and falling off the bolt. This could result in the loss of steering control and
increase the risk of a crash.
UNITS AFFECTED
Please refer to the attached population list for affected units and VINs.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Follow the attached work instructions to verify both upper and lower steering bolts are torqued
correctly, and document with pictures.

This notice is sent to you as a Newmar
Dealer in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic
and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Newmar
Corporation has decided that a defect, which relates to motor
vehicle safety, exists in specific Newmar
recreational vehicles.
The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act requires that each vehicle, which is subject to a recall
campaign of this type, must be satisfactorily repaired within a reasonable time after the owner has
tendered it for repair. A failure to adequately repair within 60 days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie
evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time. To avoid providing these problematic solutions,
every effort must be made to promptly schedule an appointment with each owner and to repair their
vehicle as soon as possible. Vehicle owners are being notified of this recall. If the condition is not remedied
within a reasonable time, they are instructed on how to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration.

Corporation has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in specific motorhomes
built on Freightliner
and Spartan Chassis.
On certain Newmar
Class A motorhomes built on Freightliner
and Spartan chassis, a problem with the upper
nut/bolt connecting the steering column not being torqued down correctly which could result in the nut coming
loose and falling off the bolt. This could result in the loss of steering control and increase the risk of a crash.
These motorhomes require immediate service. Continued use poses a potential safety hazard.
The Safety Risk
The upper nut/bolt connecting the steering column not being torqued down correctly could result in the nut
coming loose and falling off the bolt. This could result in the loss of steering control and increase the risk of a
crash.
WHAT WE WILL DO
Newmar
Corp. will provide owners of all affected motorhomes a remedy for the potential defect at no charge for parts
or labor. Units identified, as having a possible steering column issue will have the upper and lower nut/bolt
checked for the correct torque as specified by the chassis manufacture installation instructions and if needed
tightened to the correct torque. The total expected time for repair is .8 hrs. However, due to scheduling times the
service provider may need the vehicle longer.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
As this defect does affect motor vehicle safety, it is recommended that you call Newmar
service department immediately
at 1-800-731-8300. An associate will assist you in making an appointment to have this repair completed.
Federal regulations require that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notification must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within ten days.
If you have had the repair performed before receiving this letter, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost

Newmar
Corporation a ciblé un défaut, lié à la sécurité des véhicules à moteur, sur des véhicules récréatifs
spécifiques construits sur des châssis Freightliner
et Spartan.
Problème :
Sur certains véhicules récréatifs, l’écrou/boulon supérieur reliant la colonne de direction pourrait ne pas avoir été
correctement serré. Si l’écrou se desserre et tombe, vous pourriez perdre le contrôle de la direction.
Risque pour la sécurité :
Une perte de contrôle de la direction pourrait créer un risque d’accident.
Mesures correctives :
Newmar
informera les propriétaires par courrier et vous demandera d’amener votre véhicule récréatif chez un
concessionnaire pour inspecter et serrer les écrous/boulons supérieurs et inférieurs de la colonne de direction, si
nécessaire.
Une réparation immédiate des véhicules récréatifs est indispensable. Leur utilisation continue présente un danger

Steering Pinch Bolt Work Instructions
Upper Bolt
1. Remove lower steering column cover(s) to inspect and/or torque the steering bolt/nut
to specification. It is normally held on by a screw on each side of the column.
2. Take picture of pinch bolt before torquing.
3. Torque the upper pinch bolt (nut side) to the appropriate specification for the chassis:
• Freightliner
= 35 FT LB
• Spartan
o Determine if Spartan used TRW
column drive or Reax column
TRW
column M10 1.5 Bolt = 41 FT LB
Reax column 7/16”-14 Bolt = 54 FT LB
4. Take a picture of the pinch bolt after torquing.
5. Reassemble the lower steering column cover and rotate the steering wheel to make
sure it does not rub on the steering column cover. If it does rub, reposition the steering
column cover, and then retest.
Lower Bolt
1. Underneath the front of the coach, locate the pinch bolt securing the steering shaft to
the steering gear box. (This is the shaft coming down through the floor to the gear box).
2. Take a picture of the pinch bolt before torquing.
3. Torque the lower pinch bolt (nut side) to the appropriate specification for the chassis:
• Freightliner
35 FT LB
• Spartan (TRW
) 41 FT LB
• Spartan (Reax) 54 FT LB
4. Take a picture of the pinch bolt after torquing.
5. Submit the four pictures with the claim. Please name the pictures in this manner:
• Coach #, Claim #, line item #, followed by “upper pinch before”
• Coach #, Claim #, line item #, followed by “upper pinch after”
• Coach #, Claim #, line item #, followed by “lower pinch before”
• Coach #, Claim #, line item #, followed by “lower pinch after”
