STARTER M-TERMINAL NUT RE-TIGHTENING

SUBJECT:

Description: On certain 2018 MY Sonata (LF) equipped with the 2.4L or 2.0L Turbo engine, the
starter M-Terminal nut may become relaxed and loosened. If this condition exists, the vehicle may
experience a no crank condition in colder ambient temperatures. In most cases the starter will function
normally at room temperature.
This bulletin provides the service procedure to properly tighten the starter M-Terminal nut.

Applicable Vehicles: Certain 2018 Sonata (LF) equipped with 2.4L and 2.0L Turbo engines with
production date range between 4/12/2017 to 8/13/2018.

 IMPORTANT
The battery negative cable must be disconnected before starting the service procedure.
Failure to disconnect the battery negative cable could cause 180A battery fuse and/or 30A
starter fuse to open; subsequently rendering an inoperative starting and charging system. It
may result in warranty claims charge back.

Over torquing the M-Terminal nut could damage terminal and starter solenoid
components, subsequently rendering an inoperative starting system and may result in
warranty claims charge back.
Follow the Workshop Manual starting system diagnostic procedure if no crank condition is
observed at normal room tempearture.

Advisors, Technicians, Body Shop Manager, Fleet Repair

Service Procedure:
1.

Record the customer’s AM/FM/Sirius
XM radio preset stations (if applicable).

Turn the ignition switch OFF and
disconnect the negative battery terminal
(A).
Tightening Torque:
4.0 ~ 6.0 N.m
(0.4 ~ 0.6 kgf.m, 3.0 ~ 4.4 lb-ft)

Safely position vehicle on the lift.
Remove the engine under cover (B).
Tightening Torque:
7.8 ~ 11.7 N.m
(0.8 ~ 1.2 Kgf.m, 5.7 ~ 8.6 lb-ft)

Remove the intake manifold stay
bracket (C) mounted on the side of the
engine.

Tightening torque:
18.7 ~ 23.5N.m
(1.9 ~ 2.4 Kgf.m, 13.7 ~ 17.4 lb-ft)

Torque the starter solenoid M-terminal
nut with a 1/4 in. drive torque wrench
and a 10mm socket.

Tightening torque:
5.0 ~ 5.5N.m
(0.5 ~ 0.6 Kgf.m, 3.7 ~ 4.1 lb-ft)
Install all removed parts in the reverse
order of removal.
Verify repair.
Reprogram radio preset stations (if
applicable).
Service procedure is complete.
