TSB/Document Date: 2021-11-08

Summary

Shoreland'r has detected stud bolt failures that have occurred on trailers in inventory.

_ February 14, 2013 —
ShoreLand’r Customer:

ShoreLand’r has detected stud bolt failures that have occurred on trailers in inventory. These failures have been
limited to non-brake axle hubs and stud bolt lots 1201, 1211, and 1213 (printed on the stud bolt head), which were
installed on trailers manufactured from October 1, 2012, to January 31, 2013. Trailers delivered to dealers after
February 14", 2013 do NOT need to be checked.

The manufacturing date is noted on VIN label located on the inside of the side-frame just behind the tongue as
well as the outside of the side-frame just ahead of the right taillight). The quantity of stud bolts from these lots
that have failed is a small percentage but it is elevated from what would be normally expected.

According to Unique Functional Products (UFP), the manufacturer of these hubs, the failures are due to hydrogen
embrittlement, a symptom of bolts not reaching the correct temperature and/or holding the temperature for
sufficient time after the zinc plating process. In these cases, the stud bolts will fail within 24 hours after being
appropriately torqued, either dropping from the hub or breaking free from the button upon attempt to re-torque.

If a wheel is already mounted at 90 ft. Ib. torque, it is imperative that the wheel studs be re-torqued at 90 ft. Ib. no
sooner than 24 hours later to check for failed studs. A defective stud will feel as if the nut is loose and then the
stud will break free.

UFP has provided the attached service bulletin detailing how to check wheel studs on a) a hub where there is no
wheel and b) on a hub with a wheel mounted.

e THIS IS A MANDATORY CHECK TO BE COMPLETED BY THE TIME THE TRAILER IS PUT IN SERVICE BUT NO
LATER THAN FRIDAY MARCH 1%, 2013. IF A TRAILER HAS REACHED AN END-USER, THE DEALER MUST
REACH OUT TO HIM OR HER TO CONDUCT THIS CORRECTIVE ACTION.

e Studs from lots 1201, 1211, and 1213 must be removed and discarded. In the case that the wheel has
already been mounted, all studs must be re-torqued no sooner than 24 hours after mounting the wheel.
If a stud failure is detected during the re-torque, the stud must be replaced.
ShoreLand’r will pay a flat rate of $10 per axle for inspection and $10 per lug for studs that need to be replaced;
please follow regular warranty procedures including serial numbers (for reporting purposes, one serial number
ONLY per claim form) for trailers inspected and/or corrected.

For warranty forms and/or questions, please contact one of the following ShoreLand’r personnel:

Gary Bolles — [email protected] — 800.859.3028, ext. 5230#
Michelle Schmidt — [email protected] — 800.859.3028, ext. 5316#

UFP is making modifications to their processes to make sure this issue does not reoccur. We apologize for this
issue and will work with you to get any issues in the field resolved as quickly as possible.

Sincerely,

Doug Clough
