Sound Selector replacement, VSS04 to VSS05
Revised August 2021 – General revision

DESCRIPTION
When replacing a vehicle sound selector model VSS04 with a new sound selector model VSS05,
an interface harness is required to connect the vehicle harness to the new sound selector model
and a new VSS05 compatible radio unit must also be installed. This procedure describes the
steps required to perform this update.

Material can be obtained through regular channels.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

DANGER
Park vehicle safely, apply parking brake, stop the engine and set battery master switch(es) to the OFF
position prior to working on the vehicle.

1. To gain access to the radio and sound selector (VSS) connections, remove the dashboard
cover by unscrewing the five (5) M4 – 0.7x 20 screws that secure it to the dashboard (Figure
2).

2. Using a small flat head screwdriver, disconnect the five (5) connectors at the back of the
sound selector (VSS) (Figure 3).

3. Remove the hex nut that holds the sound selector to the dashboard support (Figure 3).
4. Repeat operations 2 and 3 for the radio; remove the hex nut, disconnect the harness and the
antenna cable.
5. Insert 2 flat radio removing tools in the vertical openings located on both sides of the sound
selector front panel and pull out the sound selector (Figure 4 & Figure 5).

6. Insert two (2) U-shaped radio removing tools in the four (4) holes located on both sides of the
radio front panel and pull it out (Figure 5 & Figure 6).

NOTE: Some radio models may require flat radio removing tools.

7. Before installing the new VSS05 sound selector in place, the back-support opening will need
to be enlarged to allow sufficient clearance for the bigger VSS05 connectors.
8. Use a die grinder and a small cutting wheel or a suitable carbide bit and follow Figure 7 &
Figure 8 below. Protect the area against metal particles.
NOTE: Do not cut through the central hex nut area of the support.

9. Before installing the new radio in place, the antenna connector opening will need to be
enlarged to allow sufficient clearance (Figure 9).

10. Install the new VSS05.
11. Install the new radio.
12. Tighten the hex nut at the back of each unit.

13. Use the connections schematic (Figure 10) below to connect the dashboard harness to the
VSS05 interface harness and the radio harness.
NOTE: To avoid improper connection, the interface harness connectors are all shaped
differently.
14. Connect the AM/FM antenna cable to the new radio. If applicable, connect the XM/Sirius
satellite radio antenna cable to the new radio.

15. Insert OR C4 circuit terminal into black connector A63.C cavity no. 4 as shown in Figure 10 &
Figure 11.

16. Position the interface harnesses appropriately into the dashboard.
NOTE: It may be necessary to reroute part of the factory harness to gain sufficient
clearance to allow the dashboard cover to be put back into place.
17. Double-check that the sound selector and the radio are firmly positioned in their respective
location and that all connections are tight. Use cable ties as required to secure the harness to
the dashboard supports.
18. Reinstall the dashboard cover.
19. Using Premium TechTool software, remove the MID206 parameter. To do this, refer to REMOVING MID206 IN PTT in instruction sheet IS-16100.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Radio external audio inputs i.e. USB and auxiliary ports are now located
on the front panel of the new radio. Therefore, radio external audio inputs, USB and auxiliary
port located inside the dashboard lower drawer is no longer supported.
