On January 21, 2015, EPA, states, and the automotive industry signed an agreement to
reduce the use of copper and other materials in motor vehicle brake pads. The agreement
calls for reducing copper in brake pads to < 5 percent by weight in 2021 and 0.5 percent by
2025. In addition to copper, this voluntary initiative reduces mercury, lead, cadmium,
asbestiform fibers, and chromium-six salts in motor vehicle brake pads.
Beginning 11/16/2020, trucks were produced with reduced copper content brake pads/shoes.
To cope with the higher operating temperatures produced by the new low/no copper friction
material, the web size of the disc brake rotors was increased.
With the high copper content brake pads no longer being produced, care must be taken to
correctly pair compatible parts per axle.
Trucks using a VOLVO proprietary rotor with a web thickness of less than 16mm must use a
brake pad containing at least 5% copper. If 5% copper pads are not available, the rotors
must be replaced with ones having the 16mm web.

IMPORTANT: The mounting flange of the updated rotor is thicker requiring longer mounting
studs.

IMPORTANT: When replacing the disc brake rotor, the thicker rotor requires longer mounting
studs. Longer mounting stud part number: 24019860.
IMPORTANT: The recommended best practice is to replace these rotors in pairs to ensure
brake balance and reliability across the affected axle.
