Misdiagnosed High Pressure Fuel Pump
ISSUE
Debris found in fuel filters has become an increasingly common concern for owners and
technicians. This has led to unnecessary part replacements that lead to excessive customer
downtime and non-credited warranty claims.
REQUIRED ACTION
The troubleshooting for metal in fuel should not be followed unless a technician was directed
from another section of the troubleshooting manual, such as, a Fuel System fault code or
excessive noise.
The troubleshooting and repair strategy has been updated for the two-filter fuel system and
must be utilized immediately. Inspecting the fuel filters is no longer part of the metal in fuel
troubleshooting. Replacing the fuel injectors is no longer required or permitted for high pressure
fuel pump failure.
Table 1 gives examples of typical debris in the fuel filters/filter bowls that are not associated with
a high pressure fuel pump failure.
