Brake noise can vary greatly. The most common brake noise complaint is squeal.
The frequency range for brake squeal is large and the countermeasures necessary for different
frequencies are quite different. The result is that without accurate frequency measurements, it is
not possible to determine the appropriate countermeasure.
There are modern tools that are very easy to use to collect frequency and volume (measured in
Decibels, dB). It can even be easier than trying to get a video or sound recording.
The tool mentioned above is called a Spectrum Analyzer or a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). It is
possible to download an app for a phone or tablet that accomplishes this task quite easily. A couple of examples are shown below.

A couple of notes to help in the use of these apps:
• The volume level of the noise you are capturing (measured in dB) is critical in determining the severity of the noise. So it is best to capture this live, than to get it from a video (the volume of the computer playing the video will then determine the dB reading).
• Screen shots are sufficient, if you are able to freeze the screen and then put a cursor on the noise
so that the exact frequency and dB can be seen (like the second one above) that is extremely
helpful.
Please attach the screen shots to the PQIS job. We will then have a starting point to work from.
