SITUATION
Customer complaint of a high-pitched chirping/whistling sound. It emanates from the intake system and
results in a flow noise in the throttle valve which is slightly open in this speed range. The noise can be heard
at speeds between 2300 rpm and 3500 rpm, mainly in gears 1 to 3. In the higher gears, it is superimposed
by wind and tire noises.
This is a flow noise in the intake tract which occurs when the throttle valve is slightly open in the speed
range described. The noise is more obvious on current models with "BMW ShiftCam" due to the changed
valve timing and reduced mechanical noises but can be experienced on other K5x models.
This acoustic noise does not affect performance, wear or operation of the motorcycle and is considered a
normal operating condition.
Two videos are attached to the measure to clarify the phenomenon acoustically.
Video 1 shows a recording of a customer while driving (highly compressed image),
Video 2 shows the phenomenon from the point of view of the workshop (in workshop environment without
intake silencer).
