SITUATION
The 12 V battery’s dual storage system (DSS) may contain a software error which intermittently
causes a continuous resetting of the microcontroller and communication failure.
The error is displayed by a red Check Control message.

CAUSE
Software error in the Dual Storage System battery
CORRECTION
Reprogram the dual storage system battery with the DSS Flash Tool version 1.1
If the flashing is unsuccessful, replace the dual storage system.
Note: The DSS Flash Tool is not to be confused with ISTA programming equipment.

PROCEDURE
1. Check whether there is a check control message for the dual storage system or CCM ID 2152 “Battery Faulty” or
is stored?
(This can be read out using the key reader)
Yes: Replace 10 Ah Lithium Ion battery as per Repair Instructions RA6121004 “Replacing 12-V dual storage
system- including registering battery change”
Note: A TC case is not needed to replace the battery. The replacement batteries (supersession part
number) already have the new software and do not need to be flashed. Please register the new battery
using ISTA.
No: Proceed to next steps.

Make sure the key is off and connect the battery charger to the vehicle.
3. Remove the passenger side rear engine cover.

4. Obtain the flashing tool with adapter
cable.
5. First time use only: Lock wiring
connector to the housing tab to secure the
pin connectors.
6. Remove the 4-pin connector from the
battery and connect the 4-pin adapter from
the tool.
7. Connect the power and ground from the
tool directly to the battery terminals.

8. Place the flashing tool away from any
engine heat.
9. Once connected, the flashing tool amber
LED (Power & Status) will be lit up.
10. Press the start button and the amber
LED will flash indicating the DSS battery is
being programmed.
11. After about 5 to 10 minutes the OK LED
turns green indicating a successful programing.
12. If the Error LED lights up red, refer to the
troubleshooting guide that came with the tool
(Attachment).
13. Remove the flashing tool and connect the
4-pin vehicle harness back to the battery.
14. Reinstall the battery cover.

Note: If the green “Ok” light comes on
immediately after pressing the start button,
the battery software has already been
updated.
No further action is necessary.
When required, only use, and invoice the part numbers below that apply.
Performing a part number look-up in ETK (EPC) by VIN or model in place of using/invoicing the
following part numbers may result with the wrong part numbers being invoiced and installed, this
could delay the payment of the claim.

Dual Storage Battery Part Retention (SI B61 03 21)
Your center is responsible for the proper identification, storage, and documentation of the Dual Storage
Battery and other related parts that were removed to perform the replacement repair outlined in this bulletin.
They must be held in a secure retention area until notification of claim payment is made by BMW NA
through DCSnet.
Upon claim payment, DCSnet part return tags will be generated the parts replaced and claimed, including
the Dual Storage Battery.
Please DO NOT return the replaced Dual Storage Battery directly to the WPRC.
Please follow the BMW Lithium Ion / High Voltage Distribution and Recycling procedure for these
returns as outlined in ABDM Bulletin: B-2-0719-0603.
Dual Storage Batteries are classified as dangerous goods by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and
require special preparation, packing and labeling for transport. Your center can use the Labelmaster®
Dangerous Goods Information System (DGIS) for proper shipping procedures and guidelines (additional
information for the DGIS can be found in SI B01 22 16).
Any claim-related return requested parts that are not received within 60 days of the claim credit date may be
subject to debit.

Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via normal claim entry utilizing the applicable work package
information below, and when required, the part numbers listed above that apply.
